Sample vs Population Standard Deviation

For AQA A-Level Statistics, when doing some hypothesis testing, is it expected for me to use the sample standard deviation, or instead the population standard deviation?

In a situation where the data is from a sample not a population, should I just ignore the difference?

The usual hypothesis test is something like - is the sample mean different from the population mean, so you generally need the sample standard deviation to interpret/scale the difference. Otherwise the number of samples wouldnt really enter the calculation/test.
