How do we calculate what the vector is if the question says we have a trip of 16 km northwest.
It's common in questions like this for "i" to represent east and "j" to represent north. Using that convention, the vector (-i + j) points northwest. So what you need is a vector parallel with (-i + j) with magnitude 16.
