Specific Course: History of Art
Universities you're applying to: Oxford, UCL, Edinburgh, Glasgow, Warwick
A level / IB / Higher grades: A*A*A
GCSE grades: 9,9,9, 8,8,8,7,7,6
Random question: Wondering if anyone has the interview questions asked last year in order to practice for this years.

Talk about art and why your like a particular painting. Have your own ideas not parrot-fashioned from a book.

If the Professor has written a book, read it before you go in.

Are all your A-levels achieved? If so, your GCSEs won’t matter much.

hii has anyone received an offer to study history of art at oxford? and if so which college? i have been offered a place at lincoln college, probably a long shot of finding anyone else because it’s a small cohort but would be interested to know if anyone has!

Which two pairs did you choose? I picked the two pairs of paintings! They were more well known than I had expected : )

i did the ones w the artists (2nd option) and the 4th option (paintings) also lol! mostly bc i love Islamic art and felt i could say something about urban life in the 4th pair

icl i was lowkey shocked when they asked me about it and my answers in my interview tho!

what shocked me was the amount of well known artists used. I expected more niche stuff I guess. I don't really know though

what I mean by the tripos has changed is that I know its undergone changes and you can see that, as they changed the interview process a bit and gave context to each images. The department told me the tripos is changing when I was at my summer school!

this is so real but i will say i asked them in my interview if they had a sense of what new special subjects they were thinking about offering and/or what new areas they are hoping the dept will be able to teach and they admitted they were understaffed and particularly in Islamic art which was a bit of a bummer tbh. what about the interview process do you think changed though? because i wasn’t expecting to be asked about my exam answers for one and wasn’t sure if that was just a me thing or if they did legitimately change it?

this is irrelevant now but for anyone that happens to peruse this thread in the future i would probs not mention the books your interviewer has written (and hopefully they won’t specialise in the main thing you talk about) because imo they will just be able to scrutinise your answers so much more

Very small departments are a thing in History of Art. The only HoA in the UK that doesn’t have severe limitations on the temporal/geographic range of subjects taught by specialists is the Courtauld (which is expanding).
I got an offer for history of art at St John’s!
