LSBU Institute of Health and Social Care Applicant Journey: RPL, DBS and OH

Following on from our previous thread IoHSC Applicant Journey: Applying and Interviews, where we mentioned RPL, DBS' and Occupational Health checks, this thread is to go into a bit more detail about these processes.

DBS and Occupational Health

Once your offer has been confirmed you will receive information about the DBS and Occupational Health checks via email. The DBS process is carried out by our supplier Verifile, even if you’ve had a DBS before, all pre-registration students need to be DBS cleared again.

You can find more information about DBS and Occupational Health checks on our dedicated webpages.

RPL

Some of our courses within IoHSC will require applicants to complete an RPL, this is to assess their professional portfolio. Once received it will be reviewed by our dedicated RPL team to decide whether further revision is needed, accepted or declined.

The process of RPL is lengthy and only completed once you have a conditional offer for the course. You are advised to start work on this as early as possible. We’ve included a step by step of the process below:

- Once the applicant receives a conditional offer, a separate email is sent to them giving them information on the RPL process. Offers will always be conditional on passing their RPL, even if the applicant has their degree and Maths and English Level 2 completed.

- The applicants are asked to complete the RPL and submit it to the academics (There is a deadline for submitting the RPL)

- In the email applicants are also given information on how to complete the RPL, there is also information on how to book onto RPL workshops where a tutor will advise on any RPL issues. Note: the Admissions team does not handle the RPL process, applicants will be given the relevant contact details for the RPL team in their initial email.

- Once the RPL is submitted the RPL team will process and if further information is required the tutor contacts the applicant directly, for example if something is missing from the RPL.

- Once the applicant passes RPL, the admissions tutor informs the AO and then we change the offer to unconditional on UCAS, if no other qualifications are outstanding.

We hope this clarifies some of the post-offer components for the courses within the Institute of Health and Social Care.

If you have any further questions about this process or any advice please let us know in the replies!

LSBU
As a first year Adult Nursing Student at LSBU, the occupational health and disclosure and barring checks aren't something to be nervous about.

I'm a student with a hidden disability, if your applying and you know you have a disability or dyslexia, or a health conditiion that might affect your studies - don't be nervous - you can contact the disability and dyslexia service at the universirty or the admissions office, and they will happily discuss your unique circumstances.

You can do this now, if you leave it to the summer it can be more challenging to have those conversations as there's a lot of demand.
