Hi!
I'v got an offer for MA Linguistics at UCL. It's very theoretical and I heard the course is so difficult that one should spend almost all the time(except eating & sleeping) working on it. I'm a little worried about it and want to know more about this course, is it really difficult to learn as I heard? How about its academic reputation in linguistics, compared to University of Edinburgh?
Thx!

Hi,

I have been offered a place at UCL to do med.chem and have just applied for the accomodation. I got a postcard thing saying they had received my application and would let me know by the 10/9/10 which is quite close to when i go, just wondering if you tend to find out before this?

It can be anything from results day to the day they specify, or even after.

Just depends when they allocate your place...

Hi
I don't know if this 'cheating' or not but, I really want my accommodation, come September, to be Schafer house. Any people here that were put in Schafer house, may I ask what criteria you put on the accommodation form? And did you put in a little note asking if you could be put there?

Thanks.
Hey
I'm currently doing the IB and was wondering how ex-IB students found their application for UCL? Did the uni favour the qualification? I plan on studying law, and i understand that you need 39 points + to gain a place. Was anyone offered a place below this?

Also, this year the open days for LSE and UCL are on the same day (30th June). Do you think it would be possible to attend both?

Thanks!
I'm looking to do art history with French at UCL for 2011, Just wanted to know what the course was like and if you had an extensive knowledge of the subject beforehand?
Also, because I've only recently decided (within in the past 6 months or so) that this is what I wanted to do, I didn't do an Art history A- Level, but am doing an AS next year, do you think this will put me at a disadvantage?
Thanks.

Shouldn't really be a problem. They're only twenty minutes walk from each other. And neither is exactly huge. I guess it depends whether there are any structured tours etc. you want to attend that clash.
I've got an offer for chemical engineering at UCL. I don't know yet if I'm gonna firm it.

It's impossible for me to visit the department and I have not seen any pics of the department. In the prospectus there is not a single word about or a single picture of the facilities of the chemical engineering department. Prospectuses of some other unis do say at least something.

If UCL were proud of their chemical engineering facilities there would be information about it in the prospectus, right? It seems just like they want to hide it.

If someone knows where I can find pics of the chemeng department of UCL that would be great. Or if someone could post pics here or pm me.

Thanks in advance.
Hi there, I am still unsure about which college to stay for this year at UCL(this september). Because I am an international student from Thailand, so I am looking for the environment in which will suit me. Which hall do you guys recommend me going? My friends told me that college hall and international hall are good, and that I will get to know lots of people from other uni as well. However, I also prefer having my own bathroom and I think I prefer catered. Or, do you recommend me Ramsay Hall? since Ramsay and college hall are very close to UCL as well. I really need you guys advise, please help me, I haven't even been to London yet (well last time was 6 years ago and that doesn't count) Oh, and I also prefer the one that warmly welcome you and have parties (but not too crazy though) : )

Thank you so much

Hello!

I heard a brutal rumour that Architecture students don't get a 'proper' freshers week due to the HUGE amount of work they have from word go?! Could anyone shed light on this matter for me, please?! Haha...

thank youu!!

Having lived with 2 1/2 architects this year and intending to live with 1 architect next year, I can confirm that they do get a horrendous amount of work to do. You will have some sort of freshers week, however I would be prepared to have more work than other people doing other subjects.

I'm not telling you this to scare you, just to prepare you. However - architects seem to be very well-bonded, committed and also they throw a Bart-fest party in the summer which is pretty good :p:

I can confirm this. I know one of those architects and she (claims to) work all the time!

However, she does also make it along to all the jazz society rehearsals and social events (which are fairly numerous) so it's not like you can't have an outside life
i think there should be a disclaimer in this thread stating that those wanting to ask questions should at least read through the thread, or use the search function before asking the same old stupid questions again and again.

imagine how frustrating it is for people trying to help but have to keep repeating themselves.

some of the questions being asked here are surprisingly naive and many of them could be found simply by visiting the university's website. the fact that theyre not doing that and just posting here just goes to show that theyre plain lazy and dont deserve a proper answer from anyone in the know. of course this is just my opinion. ::wink::

I don't know specifically with fine art, but generally speaking there are 2 things to consider when thinking about changing course at uni:

1. What are the entry requirements of the course/s you want to change to. Do you meet those requirements?

2. How popular is the course you want to switch to? If a course is particularly oversubscribed (e.g. law or medicine) then it's very unlikely you'll be allowed on to it.
If it helps, a friend of mine switched from Fine Art to Philosophy

Also bear in mind that it's a LOT easier to switch courses before you get to UCL, as opposed to after you've arrived. If you do it beforehand, it's clear that it's a reasonable decision made after consideration. UCL seem to assume that if you want to switch two weeks after you've arrived, you've just been caught out by how hard the course is and you've panic chosen to switch to something you think is easier.

I switched from French and Italian, to single honours Italian. This was about three weeks into term, and they made it very difficult for me. They assumed that I simply wasn't prepared for university level study, was lazy and couldn't be bothered to put the effort in when French got hard. The tutor also told me how people who change subjects after they arrive tend to drop out altogether because they can't hack it.

If you email in advance then you can consider your options when they answer. If they say no in the summer, then you can consider whether you'd be content doing Fine Art anyway, or whether to take a gap year and reapply. Whereas if they say no when you've been there a fortnight already, the loans situation gets complicated it's a lot worse.

Good luck!

hi, i have a question & it may sound silly to you but for an international student its a bit confusing. Regarding the 4 years MEng degree, will they give me a BEng degree at the end of my 3rd year ? even if i didn't complete the 4th year ?

in my country we don't have such courses, it's all individual ( either Beng or Meng).

I was just wondering, what's it like sharing a room? Will they try and match you up with someone who has similar interests? I'm not interested in clubbing or getting drunk or anything and I don't like staying up late (I try and stick to a routine, lessens my chance of getting headaches) so I prefer socialising in the day time and doing 'tame' things like shopping or seeing a play or just talking and drinking tea. I'm just worried my roommate will be the polar opposite of me (I assume I'll be sharing anyway, I'm applying for self-catered). Is this ever a problem?
Also, does anyone here to Ancient world studies? What's it like? What's the workload like? I'm just too excited for my own good really.

It's really not a problem. My room-mate never goes out at night, and I'm out three times a week. You just learn to put up with each other. Your room-mate might annoy you staying up late and coming in at night, but you'll probably annoy them just as much in other ways. It's all about being reasonable and tolerant of each other.

Hi guys!

There is this small thing... I am in the middle of my A-levels right now (polish). I got the offer from UCL
Chemistry 85%
Biology English Mathematics 72%

The thing is that I did 98% English, 92% mathematics and areund 96% chemistry however I totally failed at biology and got around 64%?

The question is if someone had simmilar situation and was still accepted? Cause I kinda accapted that I didn't meet the offer and I will have to try again next year.
Reply 999
We can't tell you for sure, but UCL is massively oversubscribed, so I wouldn't get your hopes up on getting a place if you miss your offer. The offers are made because they want you to get those marks. They think you need a 72% in biology to do the course, so if you don't achieve that, it's irrelevant how well you did in other subjects. You can call on results day and see if they'll let you in, just don't bank on it.

EDIT: Actually, are those your actual results, or what you think you achieved? If they're just assumptions, then wait until results day, you might have done better than you expected!
