So are Packard Bell just not very reliable then? Going back to my previous question, do you think processing power is more important than ram and reliability (specifically i5 3gb ram Packard Bell vs i3 4gb ram Dell)? Cheers.

Apparently the brands to avoid are Packard Bell, HP and Acer or Asus, not sure which. Dell, Sony and Mac seem to last a long time - the family laptop in my home is a Sony Vaio, about 3 years old - never had any problems with it.

Edit: as other posts below will state - ASUS is the good one.

Sony seem to have bad battery.

It's Acer that are bad, Asus are good.. The study is 2 years old, but can't find any more recent unbiased study.

Wouldn't surprise me if it's different now though. Companies tend to buckle up once they get a bad reputation.

I'd look for a better processor over RAM, since you can upgrade RAM yourself if needs be.

Asus are fine.
HP, so so.

I've found their batteries to be quite poor too.

Just when I was browsing, they'd have good specs for the price (To mask the 2-3h battery life?).

Mine's alright - I can get about three hours out of it but it's old! I did hear that the new ones overheat lot, the neon ones - cause of the bad battery?

HP's rep has kinda stuck with me but thanks for clearing up the Acer/Asus thing, I weren't sure which A it was!

I found the battery on mine to be okay for its age but I know nothing about the new ones, other than an oddly placed fan which causes them to overheat. I heard HP was very unreliable from a family computer guy friend.

Thank you for clearing any matters up guys!
Hello again! Just asking for my sister who's looking for a new laptop, she doesn't want a MacBook but she wants something with an i5 processor so that it'll still be quite fast for a few years. She's looked at these two, but I've never had a Samsung or seen one so I thought I'd ask on here:

Can someone please explain the difference between Intel® Core™ i5-2410M processor and i5 380M or 480M... The first being 2.3ghz with some 2.9 GHz Max Turbo Frequency shizzle and the others just 2.53 ghz... makes no sense :'(

The 2nd generation i series (any i3/5/7 with 2 in front of the three numbers) has Sandy Bridge architecture. In simple terms, they've re-configured the processors so they're more efficient - although they are lower Ghz they are actually more powerful. They can also control themselves, which is why they're advertised as 2.3ghz with 2.9ghz turbo (they'll boost performance when required or chill out if they're doing something that isn't so taxing, rather than going full pelt all the time and wasting energy). Go for 2nd generation if you can.

Thank you very much for the quick and detailed reply! +1

One more question if you dont mind, so do you think something like the second product is a better buy (all the other specs are pretty much the same I think)?

Well she wants a Samsung because there's a £50 cash back deal, but I've been trying to persuade her to get a Dell because it's a brand that is known for computers, however I could be wrong about Samsung.

How bad is the Intel HD Graphics 3000 or whatever..
i found a really good Acer laptop but i read some reviews that sometimes it can overheat (the touchpad as well) to up to 90 degrees :/ no idea what to do
