quite a few people have mentioned that theyw ant ensuite and self catered form what im researching but are hardly gettin any responces :frown: so i'll just repeat lol: im looking for self catered and ensuite and have narrowed it down to place sliek Elgar, Jaratt, Mason redevlopment and Shakelton. They're all stupidly priced if you ask me so im considering beeches but do they do duplex or en suites? any views on the best out of the above would be much appreciated :d

The Beeches doesn't have any duplex ensuite rooms, they are all flats with shared bathrooms. It would be a good choice though. With regards to value for money, I would recommend that you think about either QHC or Hunter Court as well. Both are ensuite and cost the same. Whilst more than The Beeches, they still provide more value for money than University's own stock, especially QHC as it is located in the city centre near the Mailbox.

thanks tom i'll chek them out. Never thought off campus would be a preferred choice though - are they any less sociable? Also, do you know if we'll be shown such halls on accomodation day by any chance?

They're no less sociable so don't worry. I was at QHC last year and loved it. Hunter Court and The Beeches are both definitely being used this year exclusively by UoB (they will be included in the open days) so they will be exactly the same as any hall on the vale with a fully funded Residents Association etc. QHC hasn't been decided on yet as far as I know. (Probably won't be in the open day guide but I still advise you to go and take a look)
Orange mood
that what i was thinking of BUT on their website it says this thing:
Apply through UCAS and make Birmingham your firm choice of university
Firmly accept the offer of a place from the University and ensure your application for accommodation is received by our Housing Services department by 31 May 2010 for UK/EU students and 31 July 2010 for international students

That is there guartneee policy, which means you WILL have a place if you are firm and apply beforehand, if you are an insurnace student they will allocate you a place if they have some left.
thanks

Its always good to be in cheap housing but first years really need to experience being in halls before venturing into that but good luck

Also if you apply late and get into places like qhc and IQ5 dont worry. They have quite a few benefits as well such as:

4-5 min walk to broad street(Cinemas, casinos, gatecrasher  etc)
Same to five ways(Tescos, Train station Broadway plaza, virgin extra gym)
Also about 15 min away from twon centre and bullring is always great.

The places are social so don't worry about losing out being in the vale, and *cough* We won best halls this year *cough* :p: . At first I thought great I'm in nowheresville, but I am having a lot of fun down at QHC and my mates love IQ5 too(they have indoor sports pitch which is always great for footie and basketball). The distance to uni is about 35-45 minute walk through the canal which also leads to mailbox in the other direction, and the vale is only 20 minutes away so don't worry if you think you won't see them , but if you are lazy at times you can take train (£1 with railcard) or 50p buses to the university main campus.

Also got lots of restaurants, takeaways near five ways too if you are lazy to cook and they have en-suite bathrooms and nice kitchen spaces(QHC) and lounge space(QHC). So if you get that, don't think its the end of the world. If you get no accomodation, then i would advise to getting into beeches, hunter court, victoria halls or Queens Hospital Close asap.

Wow long speech :p:
ahh thanks for that Garaa I'm really swaying towards off campus halls now; i dont mind missing out on the Vale becaus eim sure we'll all befriend someone living there so when we go to visit - we can hang aroudn there right  lol.

In your opinion which is the best (1st choice) ensuite off campus halls to go to and why?

For me I'd have to say they both have their pro and cons and I would consider visiting both soon as they are so close to each other.

QHC:

Got our own bar to watch the football, rugby etc.
Got more parking than most people.
24 hour security on site.
Closest to the town center.
BIGGEST kitchen and lounge space compared to IQ5.
Nice bedroom and ensuite but I would say IQ5 just beats us on length of the rooms(just).
Space dedicated to put your bikes in.
If you get in the morgue building, you get free Tv and don't have to pay tv liscence.
The morgue also has bigger rooms and queen sized beds.

IQ5:

Indoor Sports pitch.
Nice rooms and shower combo.
Average kitchen space and living space.
Lifts :p:
Limited parking space.
If you are lazy and can't be bothered to walk that much :p: then IQ5 is more compact so you can get to people easier.
Both have waste disposal rooms and laundry rooms(not sure about IQ5)
Both next to the canal.
About 3 minutes closer to the university campus.
Both right next to broad street which is VERY handy as you dont have to pay for taxis back home. (So funny laughing at the vale people wasting more money on these :p:)

But I think IQ5 is cheaper option out of the two, i'll look for the prices soon, but even though its cheaper, I prefer QHC lots more. Atmosphere is great and I just love it there

Anyone knows about oakley court and pritchatts house, what are they like? I applied for those but seems that all of you have chosen tennis court, mason etc..
If someone could tell me about these places a bit more because I don't live in UK so can't go to see the places myself!
thanks
I went to the Viewing Day earlier; Oakley Court is definitely nicer than Pritchatt's House. The rooms are spacious in Pritchatt's House but it's 18 sharing a kitchen/bathroom, and it could definitely do with a fresh lick of paint/some new tables etc. The bedrooms are really nice in Oakley Court, and you can choose to have a duplex room there, where you share a bathroom with just one other person. In the flat we looked around, there were 10 to a kitchen/2 bathrooms. If I were you, I'd opt for Oakley Court. Both are 10 mins away from the Uni.
Accomm staff said today that none of the accommodation was oversubscribed as yet. Get your applications in quick!
It also says on the Housing Services' website that you can change your accommodation choices after today, without it affecting the initial date you applied. How good is that?!

Ace, thanks for pointing that out. When did you apply?
I've got Birmingham down as my insurance. Does anyone know whether I'm still allowed to apply for accommodation? I didn't get any letter confirming an offer. It was only through email.

Undergraduates

Have applied to our university through UCAS
Have accepted their course offer firmly by 1st September 2009
Have submitted an accommodation application by 31st of May 2009 (home and EU students) or 31st July 2009 (International students)
Are coming to university alone and not with family or a partner
Are applying for a full academic session (can choose 42 or 50 week
contracts)

I would take this that you can apply if it's your insurance as it only says that you must have accepted your offer by 1st September, which you would have.

Try, what have you got to lose?

Clearing, Insurance and Late applicants

You are still able to apply, but please be aware that if you are one of the above applicants, we cannot guarantee you accommodation. However, we will strive to offer you accommodation once we have allocated all the students who fall under the guarantee scheme. If we are unable to do so, you will be advised in September of other possibilities.

Thanks  But I need a verification code to be able to apply. i think I'll call them up on Monday to see what they say.
So what's the most sociable hall(s) / people who party hard etc?
