The Portsmouth General Chat Thread

I have to do an unstructured interview on lying (that has to last 30 minutes minimum) then transcribe it, then write a presentation about it (like a lab report - introduction, methods, results, discussion, etc).

Very boring, though the reading for the introduction will be quite interesting.

How many people will you be interviewing?
I imagine transcribing can an absolute pain the ******* arse

Only one (though we're allowed to do more )

Little bit about Portsmouth:

Portsmouth, to me, is similar to London without the rich areas. Most of the more well off people who work in Portsmouth live in Fareham or even further afield in Winchester. Lets face it though, the most densely populated city in Europe was never going to be a particularly pleasant place. This shouldn't put you off going to the Uni, however. Portsmouth does have many things going for it, lots of things that are unique to Portsmouth which you won't find anywhere else.

The football club is a very important part of the city, so if you happen to support a team Pompey are playing, (or god forbid, Southampton) don't go ranting and raving about it, especially if Pompey lose, becasue someone WILL take exception and beat you up.

I'm not entirely sure about nights out in Portsmouth, but I've heard Southampton and Winchester are better so... go there

If you're into history, Portsmouth is the place to be really. There are loads of places to visit in Portsmouth that have had a significant part in history. Portchester Castle (Roman), The Historic Dockyard (lots of stuff), Palmerston's Follies (forts on the hill), Titchfield Abbey (Shakespeare was there at some point lol :P, Southsea Castle (where Henry VIII watched HMS Mary Rose sink) and Charles Dickens' birth place. It's very much a city where stuff used to happen lol.

Shopping and eating is quite good. West Quay in Southampton is better, but Gunwharf isn't bad! It's a nice place to sit outside in the summer and have a meal beneath the Spinnekar Tower watching boats/ships leave the port.

If you come to Portsmouth Uni, STAY AWAY FROM PAULSGROVE, LEIGH PARK AND COSHAM. They aren't in the city itself, but are the surrounding suburbs. Leigh Park is the place where a paediatrician's house was burned down because they thought he was a paedophile.

The best thng about Portsmouth for me is that you can get on a ferry on go to France for the day or a weekend. The IOW is ok, but France is better. I've done this on many occassions!


I've lived here for 17 years and I love it. You probably will too... eventually.

Fellow future second year here. Cannot wait to go back to Portsmouth in September.

I only live down the road from Portsmouth when I'm not at Uni, but it's great to actually live in the City during Term-Time.

Was a bit of both really. I had originally wanted to go to Manchester Uni, but they stopped doing my degree literally just as I was about to apply. Was gutted. So I decided to go to a Uni closer to home. Portsmouth is a great City so it was an obvious choice really. I applied and got into Southampton aswell but didn't like the location or the way the Campus was laid out.

Glastonbury is awesome. I didn't want to leave Register for tickets now if you wanna go next year (it's gonna be a good one as 2012's cancelled for the olympics!)
