Winchester 2012

Hello, I'm completely new to TSR and I joined so I could introduce myself to this board as I've applied to Winchester too  Hopefully will be studying psychology as of September 2012! I've finished my A levels now so will hopefully get an unconditional offer and won't have to have horrible nerves on results day this year - it was bad enough last year with no worries of university depending on it :frown: so really feel for the rest of you

Hello prospective First years!

I'm a 3rd year studying Psychology at Winchester and I absolutely love it. For those who are waiting for offers I wish you luck - you will have a blast!
Had a read through this thread and here's some things I picked up on:

When I applied Winchester didn't take too long to get back to me, but of course it depends on the applicant.
'low entry requirements' - it's a very inclusive Uni and likes to be open-minded in what applicants it takes on, it doesn't work on an elitist 'AAA' only approach. The people on my course at least are still extremely bright so don't let this put you off.
Someone was decided between Chichester and Winchester. Chichester is actually my hometown so I can comment on this too. I'd say the cheaper option is Chichester, and it is a good Uni, but Winchester on the whole I think has better nightlife and a WAY better (and really new) Student Union + associated facilities. But Chichester is also very good (especially for sport related things) and I know a lot of people who've had a great time there.

Feel free to ask me any more questions you have!

Omg! You sound like me (well where I want to be). I'm from Chichester and hoping to do psychology at Winchester. Is the course good? And what about the tutors? Also what are class sizes like? Sorry endless questions, it might be easier to pm me  thank you for any info

Hi

I did Psychology at Winchester (and Religious Studies), graduated in 2004 so it's a few years ago now, but I had a brilliant time there

The course is really good! I reckon it's one of the best departments at the Uni. If you check the student satisfaction ratings (should be one of the columns) in the psychology league tables for Winchester I think it's like 70-something, which is really good. The lecturers are really nice, really approachable (more so in 2nd and 3rd year when you get more familiar with the uni environment). The classes are pretty small, i'd say about 30ish, mainly females but then that's something that tends to go with Psychology as a course. Quite a few mature students as well who do the Graduate Conversion Diploma . Because it's such a small uni it's so easy to get familiar with people.

Hi, thanks for the info  you've talked a bit about nightlife, but that's not really my kind of thing... So from your experience, what are the people like? I'm guessing you get a range of people anywhere but I'm worried about not fitting in with people who want to go out and get drunk all the time :P

I just got my acceptance to the Uni of Winchester postgraduate program in Drama and Media in Development. I'm a US student, and I'm very excited about heading over to the UK for school. I'm still waiting to hear back from Queens Uni in Belfast, U of Manchester, and U of Leeds... but I'm trying to get as good a feel for U of Winchester as I can without being there!

Can someone give me some info about the level of academics there? The student life? The campus?? Any info will be much appreciated as I'm not sure I'll be able to visit before I have to make my decision!!! Thanks so much!

Online booking still hasn't opened... well, not as far as I'm aware :s-smilie:

Who else is interested in going to an Open Day in Feb/March?
Does anyone know when you can start applying for accomodation?

My daughter is planning on going (with me... the designated driver/mum) and I've emailed to be alerted when the Open day bookings become available.

I did that too. They said online booking opens the first week in January, but it doesn't appear as though they have yet...

yep - I agree. I suspect lots of people have left their UCAS applications to the last minute, so perhaps Winchester are waiting until they've processed all the applications before they can plan their open days. They were on that list of unis who changed their fee status (I seem to think?) so this could have made things even more last minute dot com for everything.

Yeah that could be the case  I hope they start bookings soon, I haven't had a chance to visit Winchester yet!
