What was that on the log question about just solving mathematically or graphically?

Graphically means using a graphing calculator to read off the value of the exponential.

Numerically means by finding it using trial and error (some students do this if they have no clue)

how do you rearrange in to find b in terms of a?

log3(3b+1)log3(a2)=1 log_3{(3b+1)} -log_3{(a-2)} = -1

log3(3b+1a2)=1 log_3{(\frac{3b+1}{a-2})} =-1

31=3b+1a2 3^{-1} =\frac{3b+1}{a-2}

a23=3b+1 \frac{a-2}{3} =3b+1

a2=9b+3 a-2 =9b+3

b=a59 b = \frac{a-5}{9}

Where have you got this mark scheme from mate?

It depends on whether they will allow follow through marks. They decide on the mark scheme after they get the results back to see where most students slipped up. If a lot of students make a particular mistake, then they will adjust the mark scheme to allow some non dependent marks and error carried forward answer marks. However, people found this paper quite easy so it's unlikely that they'll be generous.
