How would you react if parliament blocked EU exit?

Scroll to see replies

It could be the Scottish parliament which decides to do the blocking; at least if UK parliament continues to follow convention of not altering devolved matters without consent from devolved parliament.
Interestingly enough that'd actually be entirely democratic given Scottish parliament would be representing Scottish people as it is supposed to.
I'd personally see that as one of the fair options. After all a lot of leave voters were lied to about what leaving would result in. Many actually want to change their vote as at the time of voting, they has no clue about any of the consequences, of the result and so on.

Although I think a second referendum should be put into place instead for people to have the ability to vote with TRUE facts to consider and no "£350m will go to NHS if we leave" bs.

Not to mention, the turn out was only 72.2% meaning that when you combine the population of England, Scotland, Wales & Northern Ireland (approximately 46m. That does not include immigrants) and minus the amount that actually voted, you have around 13m people who didn't cast their vote. Of course, you could say "oh they didn't bother to vote who cares about them" but at the same time, it's fair to say many didn't have a clue what to vote for due to the ridiculousness of the campaigns & what the media wrote, but now they might have already made that decision after the referendum when actual information came out.

Just a thought though

I really, really don't.

There are 8 MPs representing the Lib Dems in the current parliament.

Please, do some basic research so you don't embarrass yourself.

Edit: I don't even think they've ever had 100+ in parliament. Even at their 'strongest', numbers wise, in the coalition they only had 50-something.
Where on earth do you get 100+ from? Are you getting Lib Dems confused with something else?

I confused House of Lords with House of Commons, they have 108 seats in the House of Lords Untitled.png

Why?

Oil price is low and they would have to create a new currency (and even a new country, with embassies, an army, a central bank, etc.), whilst the markets are already paranoid. Scotland leaving the UK would lead to a true economic disaster; the UK leaving the EU is nothing in comparison.

Sturgeon would like to become independent and stay in the EU at the same time, but Spain will block their admission. When she realises that, she will stop calling for a new referendum.

Don't worry. The UK will remain united.

The vote for independence can make more people to vote for independence. It can make the difference. Why before article 50 is ratified? They would like to do the referendum before the UK leaves the EU so it is much easier for them to stay in the EU. Not only that, but this time, the SNP dominates the scottish assembly.
Leave the country immediately, I'm 90% sure a civil war would break out

Here come the Leave campaigners shouting "FFS IT'S DEMOCRACY WE VOTED 2 LEAVE !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1!1!!1! " ....

We did vote to leave, and on a higher turnout than a lot of those MPs were elected on (and under FPTP, which has its own problems). MPs going against the result of a referendum and therefore going against the will of the public they are supposed to represent is undemocratic and I would hope there would be protests and real political action about it if that were to happen.

Disgusting that some people would apparently cheer that on because it happens to suit their side.

I'd have my faith restored in the British people if that happened.

Appropriate avatar for having faith restored.

That's the dream, OP.

I know that the SNP has the majority, but they will only leave if they can stay in the EU and possibly enter the Eurozone. It would be senseless to leave now and be in the same situation as the rest of the UK.

The problem is that Europeans, especially Spain, will not accept that as it would trigger other independence votes in Catalonia, Flanders, and the Basque Country.

So elections where candidates have lied should be canceled?

The Lib Dems and some other MP's have already stated that they will try to block it.
If they are, somehow, successful, how would you react?

Personally I would be thrilled with any political solution that would keep the UK in the EU but I just don't think that's realistic. You can not just undo a referendum. And there is no real leadership in the parliament that could pull off something like this anyway. Corbyn has, in my view, huge responsibility for the loss of the Remain vote in the referendum. I think we are stuck with the outcome and all its implications for the future.

Let's not take things said by others out if context shall we. This is not about electing anyone and its a completely different issue so that's not a comparison you can make

There are a couple things which may happen if Parliament decide to screw over the people.

1. Gas pipelines occupied and shut down. This will cause London to go into a black out.
2. Ports occupied and no goods or services let though.
3. Hackers will bring down all Government websites and DDOS them constantly.
4. Petrol tankers will be blocked with Petrol stations.
5. Key London roads will be occupied blocking traffic.

And I saved the best till last. There might be mutiny in the British MOD. If that happens there won't be any soldiers to get the power stations back up & running.

It may sound scary but some group might actually be daft to EMP London.

Either way: EMP. Power Plant Occupation, Gas port Occupation or Road blocks you can see this happening:

And where do I come in? I am a doomsday prepper and I specialise in self-sufficiency. Basically whatever happens these rebel groups are going to need supplies to keep them going. That is where me and my allies come in.

The Civil war has already started.

Be very afraid. These arent empty threats.

But anyway Chaos is a ladder.

You're insane.

A Brexit would trigger other EU refs in France, Hungary, etc which could be the end of the EU. Spain doesn't want that either but as with Scottish Independence it can do very little about it (in fact, it can do more about it; Britain's terms of withdrawal are subject to a veto by EU member states)

The turn out was high.

I wouldn't be too bothered but the level of terrorism that would erupt would cause damaging divisions that will never be fixed, brexit can work and can be a great move for our country but overturning the vote will be the worst move in history, it'd be so undemocratic and chaotic even the EU would be ashamed and kick us out.
I would go on a rage

No, because nobody would be mad enough to call a referendum as Cameron did. "Leave" would win by greater margins than in the UK.

European leaders (well, Angela Merkel) now want(s) nothing to change and will do everything to preserve the statu quo within the EU.
If a UK parliament did something like that I would demand it was stripped of its sovereignty heck I'd give their powers to the bloody EU.
