I assume this is Birmingham, they actually refer to it as a pre-payment rather than a deposit, it's taken out of the total cost of the accommodation.

I agree it's ridiculous though. The whole concept of student loans is to allow those who are less privileged to have access to the education they're entitled to, and yet universities insist on charging prospective students before these loans are actually given!

Yeah it is partially my fault. I thought student finance would cover it but I didn't know it'd come so late, nor was I aware of there being a 4 day deadline so I wasn't rushing to make my student account. My parents are relatively poor as well and I didn't work during the summer because I had to babysit my brother while my parents were at work...
