HELP I can't afford deposit for my accommodation

I need to deposit £550 to confirm my accommodation place and I cannot afford it (my family earn below the national avg and I don't currently have a job) and I have 4 days to pay it. My university's accommodation phone line are off during the weekend and my deadline is on Monday (or after Monday IDK).

I thought about getting a student account and getting an overdraft but it'll take 7 working days to make an account, and that means the deadline will pass and I won't have an accommodation place at halls. Can anyone give me some sound advice please?

£550 for a deposit? Jesus 😵

£550 sounds too high, if your desperate you could get a payday loan, but the interest rate is soo high it's not worth it unless you can pay it off straight away

I have no idea, I'll check for it anyway. They sent the email for my accommodation on Thursday and told me I had 4 days to pay the deposit. Do you think the 4 day deadline will mean Monday or after monday? I sent them an email but I might call them up on Monday.

I know right? Not everyone who goes to university comes from a wealth family.
You will have to talk to he uni / accomm on Monday.
Start opening your student account asap and inform them you are just waiting fir it to be processed.
I assume this is Birmingham, they actually refer to it as a pre-payment rather than a deposit, it's taken out of the total cost of the accommodation.

I agree it's ridiculous though. The whole concept of student loans is to allow those who are less privileged to have access to the education they're entitled to, and yet universities insist on charging prospective students before these loans are actually given!

I hope things work out for you

Although I'm not sure how you didn't spot this when applying, it's literally littered all over the application process...

University of Birmingham. Ah okay then I'll call them up on Monday, although I already sent an email.

Thank you for the reassurance

Yeah it is partially my fault. I thought student finance would cover it but I didn't know it'd come so late, nor was I aware of there being a 4 day deadline so I wasn't rushing to make my student account. My parents are relatively poor as well and I didn't work during the summer because I had to babysit my brother while my parents were at work...

As I said before I find it so bizarre how they expect people to pay these things before student loans come in.

Wish you the very best 🙏🏾

why would you assume the university (who knows when student finance is paid) would expect hundreds of pounds in advance of this? it's a silly system...

is it possible for someone in your family to pay on a credit card/arranged overdraft given you can pay them back very quickly once your overdraft/SF comes through?
