You do know that barely any "manual labour" exists in Britain anymore? Most jobs that earn an amount of money that you would believe qualifies someone as a violent delinquent are actually in services or administration.

We don't have mines to go down anymore. We can no longer toil at your pleasure. Soz bout that.

What about the entire construction sector? Builders, plumbers, decorators, electricians? Face it, you have no clue what you are talking about.

Are you gonna provide any legitimate statistics or proof for your statements, or are you just a little bit resentful to the thugs in your presumably 'bad' school for stealing your lunch money and kicking you in the privates?

Most of the posts in this thread make me question whether they are serious, as I myself am working class and they miss me by miles but maybe I'm just an exception.

Classism is still pretty much around the UK, just because Blair said 'we're all middle-class' doesn't make it true.
Yeah, its hard, and unfair. That's one of the many reasons I became a Socialist. :/

May I hear the other of the many reasons.

I smell a troll. Capitalism isn't about being intelligent anyway, academics are some of the most intelligent people on Earth and they earn very little.

Arguably thats worse, they don't produce a good or a service, just leech off the state. Anyway i'm just playing devils advocate, I want to see where this is going...

:holmes:

I'm just seeing alot of spiteful vitriol against the working classes on the rest of GD. Wanted to know peoples reasons. It's quite worrying to know that people will actually despise me at university because of how wealthy their parents are.

With the exception of a light scattering of real snobs, people at university will not dislike you for your parent's income. They will dislike you if you have a personality they do not like.

Besides middle-class people get vitriol thrown at them plenty too, but apparently that's justified, whilst the converse is awful, horrible snobbery.

Not me or any of my friends.

Do we deserve to be discriminated against because of where we were born? Why is classism acceptable but racism terrible. Two sides of same coin imo.

Stop playing the victim card. Many working class people act as I described. Also many working class people have reverse classism against middle class people....

Something you have shown yourself, when insinuating middle class people only get somewhere because their parents give them jobs.

I am middle class and I grew up in a very working class area, I have worked working class jobs and I know exactly how these people are and how they act.

I got a lot of (negative) comments about me because of the way I talk (apparently i am too posh) and because of my background.

Perhaps the working class should do mroe to help themselves than hating people who try and make their lives better.

No you don't. We're not living in America. You could have a poor Lord and he'd still be upper class.

No, that's not my definition at all, I said working class people are chavvy delinquents.

You do though. You equate wealth to intelligence. Which is a flawed argument considering our wealthy specimen here. How did you earn your money btw?

So.. what about my Dad who grew up on a rough council estate in Derry.
Who now is a respected historical researcher. He is a chavvy delinquent?

Academics or the working classes?

I kind of agree with the girl in that video but I'm too tired to remember why.

I don't think 'chav' and 'working class' are synonymous. People's generalisations are annoying me.

I feel that due to there being fewer jobs in this country nowadays for non-graduates, there's a whole generation of unemployed people. Their children aren't used to having working parents so don't know any different.

The problem, I believe, is that there's sometimes no motivation to find a job and that many children's parents can't show them something to aspire to. It becomes a cycle, and that's what needs to stop.

Thats a small percentage of the work force. Most "working class" (lower paid) jobs are in services.

There is working class and then there is the under class. People really need to differentiate between the two before tarnishing all working-class people as uncultured scroungers.

Many expect the tax payer to foot the bill for their income.

Many expect the tax payer to give them a free home.

Surely that means they aren't 'working' class?

Lol at this thread. You are moaning about snobbery and then doing the exact same thing yourself (except reverse snobbery). You get offended at people stereotyping the working class but think you should be allowed to stereotype middle class people? Hypocrisy much? Maybe if you showed respect to everyone regardless of class then you'd get some back.
TWOSHANKSONESHOTTY
I hate the fact that they even have the audacity to dream about going to university. University is a place for the financially elite.

That's just a ridiculous thing to say man. :s-smilie:
I'm working class and I've dreamed of going uni for years but promised myself I'd pay my own way to show people who think like you. I've saved for years and have now landed myself an unconditional at a top uni (yeah, funnily enough working class people can be intelligent but self-esteem is what holds people back.) Are you really saying class or money should stop a person doing this and breaking away?

We don't live in the 1970's anymore mate, grow up and have a closer look at the real world around you.
Sorry about the rant but I feel strongly about this

I come from a working class family. My dad works for British Gas as a Technical Engineer and my mum works for the NHS Prescription Pricing. Neither went to University. My dad got NVQ's and stuff, but my mum got some poor O-levels. Yet they are both hard workers and I'm going to university. I had a good upbringing in a working class family, so we're not all chavvy delinquents. In fact, I loathe chav culture.

That was a little cheeky, but the self righteousness and smugness gets annoying when the only reason these snobs are wealthy is because of the luck of the draw at birth.

Er.. ok. Will remember to help myself more to get rich. After I've finished my work tomorrow I'll buy a lottery ticket.

The working class white people are the lwoest achievers in education, even foreign children ahve a better grasp of english than them

I am not resentful to the thugs in my school I quite enjoyed fighting them, I am lucky my dad put me into martial arts from age six. I have had no problems dealing with these people.

The working class people abuse the benefits system. Working class women even have kids to get free homes and money.

We need to do soemthing about these people. Starting with cutting their benefits.

So you're bitter about some idiots on an estate mocking you for being middle-class, and you've decided to take it out on those who earn under 20k a year?

What do you do to make their lives better?

Its comments like yours that are fuelling the antagonism between the two classes. And of course not all working class people are innocent little proletarian victims, but you get people like that across all classes. Idiocy isn't a class related.

No, because academics aren't working class. They're middle class. Aww bless, you think you're working class :h:
