Why do they even want the Falkland Islands? They do realise it's just like a smaller, colder, more inbred Wales with a similar amount of sheep?

Oil? Deluded views of ownership?

There's no need to be a little prick about it. I'm saying it was completely unnecessary aggressive action that killed hundreds of people not that we should have 'sent them flowers'.

Because Argentina's invasion wasn't unnecessary and aggressive?

Surely the Argentine public can see that it's never going to happen? Tsk tsk...

you say that but every 4 years, the English public still think England can win the World Cup....

Landscape-wise and climate-wise it's more akin to Yorkshire, actually. Indeed, Stanley is twinned with Whitby.

I suspect most British people underestimate the cultural significance of the Falklands to modern Argentinian identity.

They're Britain's islands.

Have you been there Drewski? Forces train there don't they?

Even ignoring the substance of the issue: to suggest your country isn't 'remotely significant' is to condemn it to insignificance. Self-fulfilling.

oh noes..

I've only been on a visit, 1 week a few years ago.

Some do, but it is deemed an operational theatre, so not that much training is conducted.

Great place to watch some low flying though

I don't think many people have teeth in their brain. Head, yes. Brain, no.

We should just nuke the waste land that is Argentina and declare it a military testing ground.

I don't. Do you?
Given that the Falklands are consistently well governed and prosperous, while Argentina is not, perhaps Argentina should rather apply for annexation to the islands?

I'm going to assume you haven't found any evidence of war crimes

Sinking an outclassed (1) battleship sailing away from the islands (2) with a nuclear submarine(3), and then destroying light unarmed craft that attempted to pick up survivors with Lynx helicopters(4) is undoubtedly a war crime.

I've footnoted your piece:

1. Irrelevant to the laws of war.
2. There was no suggestion it was fleeing. It was an operational military craft engaged in war against the UK.
3. See point (1)
4. I can find no evidence of his having happened. The Rio Iguazu was also sunk that day, but it was neither unarmed not engaged in picking up Belgrano survivors.

There's no need to be a little prick about it. I'm saying it was completely unnecessary aggressive action that killed hundreds of people not that we should have 'sent them flowers'.

It's never 'necessary' to attack anyone. The Russians could be marching down Whitehall, and it wouldn't be 'necessary' to attack. Luckily, international law does not prohibit the use of force on the basis of some sort of weird independent necessity.

It's cute that you're allowed a computer, I mean some people are against care in the community.

Its interesting that you hold the lives of enemy combatants in higher regard then the 1,300 Falkland civilians/fellow citizens who were forcefully annexed and subjugated

That claim is undoubtedly rubbish. The Belgrano survivors were picked up by her destroyer escorts, which were deliberately not attacked by Conqueror even though they had no means of defence.

While I agree with your sentiments - the islands are British and as long as the people living there want to remain British, there is no question of Argentina being allowed to have them - it's hardly as clear cut as you make it out to be.

Britain did basically abandon the islands (just leaving a plaque saying they belong to us) and then returned to them after Argentina subsequently colonised them. So they may be British - but only because the islands were basically reserved for our future use, hardly a rock solid foundation.

Could you please not treat "the people" as some homogeneous blob?

One presumes you've given up even pretending like you can properly debate this point, then?
