What is a null hypothesis?

What is a null hypothesis??

here's the question: A researcher conducted an experiment to see if people recall more words from a list of ten words when they learn and recall in the same room rather than if they learn in one room and recall in a different room. This was an independant measures design.

Suggest an appropriate null hypothesis for this experiment

(Cant upload results, but it shows that a higher number of people performed better in the same room than in a different room)
a null hypothesis in this case would be that it made no difference what room they recalled in etc
It's usually the hypothesis you're trying to DISPROVE

A hypothesis that predicts no statistical significance.

For example;
Directional hypothesis: Children will eat more sweets then adults (one-tailed)
Null hypothesis: There will be no difference between the amount of sweets adults and children eat.
