Selecting university for MSc

Hi

Please help me in selecting the best university for MSc Management among the following :

king's college london - MSc international business,
manchester - MSc international business and management,
strathclyde - international business MSc,
Edinburgh - MSc international business and emerging markets,
Bristol -MSc Management or MSc economic, finance and Management,
Lancaster -MSc international business.

Kindly write the names of the uni. only in sequence as you think that is better than the other.
Suggestion would be really helpful.
thanx!

hey! I really value your suggestion. Can you tell why king's should be preferred than others?

More suggestions would make selection easier for me!
kindly respond.
NGC, I'd like to know why you put Lancaster down as your least rated choice. Lancaster's Management School is ranked 4th in the country and is above all of the ones the OP has listed.

Anyway OP, getting people to tell you which is the better school isn't the way to go. You need to look at all the courses and all the institutions you're interested in and see which one appeals to you the most.

the thing is I am interested in MSc related to International Business Management and all these universities offer almost same type of course modules, so the main selection is to be made out of the institutes only. So please put forward your opinion!

Hey NGC, its all your opinion and I appreciate it. But please quote the reason you have put King's at preference than the others?

Thanks guys!
I don't know anything about the business schools but for the unis in general I'd probably say:

KCL
Manchester
Edinburgh
Bristol
Strathclyde
Lancaster

First thing you have to do is to get the straight:confused: mind to choose the correct subject, then you can work towards what to choose if you want career an academia MRes will be the best otherwise you could do a specialized masters select universities on FT rankings and also the research ranks, if it’s business the best is London Business School ,if you need more info why not mail or visit my site www.askhasika.info I will be able to help you to choose the best for free.
Thanks

Hey!
I am very much sure of doing MSc in International Business only, and all these univs. have got the same course with just a little difference in the course modules. So the other influencing factors would be the campus life, the exposure to business concepts as I am expected to join my family business after postgrad. and other factors that could be productive for me !!

Guys, Pls do tell me about it!

Hey,

I don´t study either business or management, but from what I have seen (on rankings) and have heard from friends studying business and/or management, I would rank your choices as follows in terms of academic quality for business and/or management:

Manchester
Lancaster
Edinburgh, Bristol, King´s
Strathclyde

It depends what you´re after really:
King´s and Ed have probably the best name (internationally and Europe-wide), while Manchester and Lancaster have pretty good business departments too, but I think the latter are more well-known domestically. Bristol is a good uni overall, but I don´t know much about the business dept...it may very well be top. As someone mentioned before, Lancs especially has a very good management dept..No nclue about Strathclyde, although someone lately told me they have a good MBA.

As a foreign student, I think that a ranking based on the overall international and Europe-wide reputation of these unis (not necessarily for business) would look like this:

Ediburgh, King´s
Manchester
Lancaster, Bristol
...
Strathclyde

It therefore really varies according to your criteria. I´d chose Edinburgh or King´s, because I probably won´t live my whole life in the UK.

Obviously, it depends on where you would like to be and what kind of lifestyle you fancy: King´s, a big, but expensive city and a uni that doesn´t really have a campus (as for any London uni really); Edinburgh and Manchester, both have decent campuses and are located in "bigger" cities too (although I wouldn´t want to live in Manchester); or finally Strathclyde, Bristol and Lancs, all have very nice campuses (especially Lancs from what I have heard) but I guess the cities are smaller and I would find them dull, but that´s only me. So, what is it that you want? Campus-life or (big) city-life? International or domestic reputation or a good training/education (although I doubt there is TOO much difference in the quality of either course)?

You should also note that Ed´s MSc is focussed on EM and I´ve heard the programme attracts a lot of international students, which, depending on your preferences, can be either good or bad. They´re all decent unis in my opinion...what I would also do is to check out the course structure, and weight the pros and cons on the aforementioned criteria (city, lifestye, etc.).

Good luck.

Hey Rango.. Thanks a lot for this...

yea...apart from a good uni what I look for is a good city, and an atmosphere where I can Study and interact with people as well..living in campus or off campus.. that is to be decided yet.. coz like if I go for a small city but a good univ. like Lancs. (as you said) I would probably live on campus... so it all really depends upon the uni. and city.. coz being an International student I would want to live and study for a year in UK where I can get the best opportunity keeping all these things in mind..!

Your further suggestions would be useful for me.. Thanks.

Hey,

Well, tbh, if you are an international student, I personally think London would be the best choice in term of social life etc. However, Master´s in the UK are only 1 year and the work load is probably quite intense, so I don´t know how much you will be able to enjoy London. Please do keep in mind that London is very expensive and can be quite stressful, especially when you are not used to big cities. On the other hand, you won´t have much of a choice in the smaller cities (Lancaster, Bristol, Strathclyde) other than living on campus. I think campus unis provide a lot more interaction between students. That is not to say that you won´t find any friends at King´s/in London, but you just won´t get the campus experience there...I am not saying you should or should not rule out King´s and London. Both King´s and London are a great uni and city, respectively.

At the end of the day, have a proper look at the courses, do some research about the reputation of each uni in the fields you´d like to work later on and I´m sure you´ll make the right choice. Tbh, I would rule out Strathclyde. Even if it is ranked well for business/management, I don´t think it is anywhere near Ed, Lancs, Bristol or Manchester...especially in terms of international reputation.

What is you undergrad in and where did you do it, if I may ask?

Good luck.

hey..thanks for sharing your viewpoint.
Well I am from India and am pursuing Bachelors of Commerce in India only.

Another thing I want to ask you is why have you ruled out strath out of the list although glasgow city and strath univ. are well reputed. please tell me the reason because you would be able to explain what the consultants and the web doesn't tell.

Please share some more viewpoints u have!
thanks

As I mentioned already, I do not study business or management. I am basing my recommendations on what I have heard from others and on my personal impressions.

Here http://rankings.ft.com/businessschoolrankings/european-business-school-rankings , Strathclyde is ranked very well among European management MSc degrees. What I meant is that the overall reputation of Strathclyde (not necessarily for management or business) does not match either Ed´s, Lancs´, Manchester´s and arguably Bristol´s at the European and international levels....I may be wrong as well! I am not saying you should rule out Strathclyde. If you like the uni, the programme and the city, go for it!
The best thing to do is talking to someone at your current uni, perhaps a lecturer/professor in the relevant field...I´m sure they will be able to make much more qualified recommendations. Laso, try to find out if there is somebody at your current uni or in your circle of acquaintances who has been at either uni...first hand experience is always the best!
Also, if you intend to got back to India, I suggest that you find out which uni has the best reputation overall and for you subject! From what I have heard, Lancs has a very good management dept, Manchester a good business school (although I don´t know how good it is at the postgrad level, but it can´t be bad), while Edinburgh and Bristol are well regarded overall (Ed is doing better than Bristol in business/management from what I know). Strathclide seems to be doing well for business/management according to rankings, but I didn´t know about the uni until 1-2 years ago untiö a friend of mine mentioned it to me...the reputation in contintental Europe can therefore not be too strong....but again, I´m not a HR person at a big company.
Also, do bear in mind that most business/management depts/schools have their niche strenghts...so pick the uni depending on what you would like to specialise in (e.g. finance, accounting, HR, strategy...). It is only going to be 1-max. 2 years, so I personally would prioritise the reputation and strenght of the programme/uni, and then pay attention to things like the city, social life, etc. The programm at Ed for example focussed on emerging markets n(which could be interesting for you considering that you are Indian), but seems to be quite general, which can be a bad thing (the description says it is a broad programm). Oh and surely another important thing to consider is to have a look at the careers graduates of either programm went on to...you can do this on the websites of each uni, perhaps email the uni directly and ask them, or try Google.

Good luck.
