Hi

Definately considering putting Lancaster as my top choice - it looks amazing! I went on a campus tour yesterday, and it was just fantastic, as I expected ^^

Anyway, I've been accepted for Psychology (AAB), so that's brilliant  But I wanted to ask a few things:

1) On the website it says that they will combine 2 AS grades for one of the A level grades there - do they do this regardless, or only if you don't achieve AAB in your A Levels themselves?

2) I've not had my welcome letter yet, but got accepted on the 3rd November - around when do they send you your letter? I've not accepted it as a definate firm yet - will it be sent after then instead?

3) Finally, I'm planning to take Psychology, as I've said. I looked in the prospectus and it says that you take ONE other subject, alongside Psychology. But the girl I was talking to yesterday said that you take TWO subjects? Could someone clear this up for me? Also, she said that she wanted to take geography alongside Psychology, but wasn't allowed to? I've heard that if you've applied for a geography degree, you can't take Psychology, but if you've applied for the psychology degree, you can still take geography?

Thank you for the help!

As for number three, becaue i'm not really sure about the first two, it depends on the course. Some subjects are double weighted, some are not... Geography, I know, is. basically, you have enough course credits to take three courses, but some subjects take up the space of one other course. Some, such as physics, take up all three, so they do no minors. I did English lit, creative writing and History in my first year, all of which are single weighted. I think, off the top of my head each course is 40 points, making 120 in total, but thats just off the top of my head!

I got a letter about my offer through the post but I don't recall a specific welcome letter. Could just be me being forgetful though.

Not all people will take an AS grade in year 13 so they probably don't combine two AS grades as standard. Rather, as you said, when someone misses the grades or is not doing three A2s.

My friend is majoring in Psychology in Education and has taken Psychology and Criminology as minors. Unless they have extra modules that only Psychology major students do (like Law), I'd assume Psychology is only 40 credits and thus you'll have to take two minors. The only limits I know of are basic timetabling clashes, specialised courses that are 80/120 credits (and thus they don't really want / can't really accommodate minor students), and the entry requirements when you came in (for example, some courses want you to have certain A Level subjects as a background). You could try emailing an admissions tutor or checking out the psychology website to see if they have a list of minors you can take. In history, there is a list of subjects we can pick from which is quite wide ranging and includes Geography.

Anyway, hope you have fun wherever you go.
Yo, yo, yo.

Q: History and Politics open day. Letter came from the Politics department and there's a Politics open-day form enclosed. But then, in the History pack they sent with it, there's an open day form from them buried in it. Do I need to return both?

I would to be on the safe side.. [return both]

departments are notourious for not talking to each other...

they might not be on the same day, and if they are they will clash if you are not carefull..
Hey. Does anyone know the times for the Sainbury's bus?

I have a rough idea (there is one at 1pm going and just gone 4pm coming back as those are the ones I used this term). Particularly interested in whether there are any in the morning.

Thanks

Hm, they are on the same day. I figured that was deliberate - because travelling 7 hours and only seeing half the course would be infuriating.

is it a combined course all the way through?

its just some people do one as a minor...
easiest thing to do is ring the department if you want to be sure [or email.. possibly easier to email... ]

Q: Am I right in saying you do 3 subjects in your first year, each with the same work load? If so, why don't people that say, want to do law but don't have the grades, just apply to something like Sociology where they can easily get in and just choose law as one of their 3 1st year subjects and just continue onto a law degree?

You are right in that. I was thinking of the same thing as well, told my mate to do that since he didn't have the grades to do a course he wanted to do. Shall see if he took the advice.

Some subjects have the same course for majors and minors, but if I am not mistaken, law is double weighted, possibly even triple, meaning that you do less/no minors. Physics is a the same (tripe weighted- they dont do minors) and geography is double weighted, although you can choose to only do half of the course as a minor.

Yep Law is triple weighted. I think Psychology is double weighted as well.

Just to clarify this means that the minor students do not take all the required courses to major in the subject and as such have to be aware that all they can do is take the subject as a minor (there is no chance of changing at the end of the year).

I don't understand... If there's no chance of changing at the end of the year then what's the point in doing the 3 subject thing in the first year?

Most subjects, you can. English, history, biology (I think) sociology, creative writing, psychology, almost everything is singe weighted, which means you can. Its just that some subjects necessarily take up more time than others. And I dont think the concept of minors was to allow us to change our degree scheme, that's just a side benefit: it's to give us a broader understanding.

Ok, thanks. Just out of interest then, if I was to be accepted to do Sociology, would I be able to change to Politics?

Probably yes. You would take Politics as a minor in Year One, along with one other minor. Sociology and Politics are both single weighted.
At the end of first year, if your performance in Politics was good enough and the Politics departments were willing to accept your transfer, then you should be able to switch to Politics as your major.
It usually happens OK if your results are good enough, but you must not take it for granted that you will be allowed to change - if Part Two Politics was over-subscribed for example.

Yup, Law is triple weighted in the first year (you aren't allowed any minors). It really is a bugger to be honest, I was a bit unsure about law at first, and because I have no minors I can't just easily switch like other students in the second year.

So yeh, word of advice from me, if you want to do Law, make sure you are 100% sure! :p:

Exactly.

Psychology is at least double weighted though. A friend of mine has taken it and is a little sad as it means she can't change to it.

Just a quick question from me. First off, are there any Lancaster Medical students on TSR? If so, how do they find the course? To anyone who knows a med student at Lancaster, what would say your impressions of them are? Happy with the course? Lot's of free time or quite the opposite?

Thanks
