University College Falmouth 2012

Hey,

A chitchat thread for those who are planning to attend UCF in 2012. The University looks great, and from what I have gathered the teaching is phenomenal. I also heard the town is great, a definite “students-village”. A university full of creative individuals is absolutely an ideal dream for me. I am planning to apply for the new ‘Creative Writing’ course, can’t wait. For all those who did apply for pervious writing courses what was the interview like?

Hi
Im Planning to go to UCF in 2012 to study journalism. I did look at the creative writing course though. Do you know anything about the nightlife and such in falmouth? at the moment its my first choice but as socialising is a big part of uni i want to know what its like in Falmouth.

I agree, socializing is important part of University. From what I heard the nightlife is considerably good, however the town is small but its best if you look through some of the previous topics about the nightlife. I heard it was good nonetheless.

Thanks for that link, its hard because everyone seems to have a different opinion on the nightlife. Im not really a clubby person but i always like to have the option ha.
I love Cornwall so much though and have been going to a different part of it my whole life, spending 3 years there sounds pretty good to me!

I also like to have the option. Last time I went to Cornwall I nearly froze to death, the drive down there was also a killer. Still, I love the look of Falmouth and the University itself.

Hi, Im a first year doing English and Media studies/Creative writing (you have to do both in 1st year) down in Falmouth  If you do journalism or english you'll be on tremough which is just getting built up, its a really nice campus but the shop is really ****, and theres no many facilities on it except for the student bar, but i have friends on campus who always seem to be having get togethers/parties or head into town so its not so bad! Falmouth itself is an amazing town to live in, coming from the city i hated it at first, but once you get down and get involved, everyone finds entertainment, theres a lot of open mic sessions here, in most the bars. There are 2 clubs too, 3 until one reason shut down for enviromental reasons (rip monday remedies) and many pubs which do get busy, because students have to go somewhere  i have to say ive visited other friends at unis and you wont find a lifestyle quite like this one! Some nights out we all end up climbing up on the boats in the harbour! and my freshers week we took a dingy out to sea! :P id recommend living in halls called "the view" not glasney view now, because your right next to the shops and town, and the beach! when i walk to get my bus to tremough, i see the ocean! Sorry for essay! if you have any questions just ask, i no how worrying it is choosing a uni! even more one thats miles away in cornwall! xx

Hey natalieann1993, sorry to go off subject, another falmouth Student here, wondered if you knew why good old Remedies closed down, as it just suddenly happend.

Also for students worrying about living all the way out on the student village at glasney, seriously dont. Yes you have to take a bus, if your based at woodlane, although not many corses are so the majority of people won't have to worry about that.
Also the social side isn't affected very much either, as soo many other firsts years live there you don't feel that cut off. Living in somewhere likfe the Falmouth View can feel a bit like that, as you have to make more of an effort, and a lot of your friends are a bus ride away, meaning there is a bit of a view bubble.
I hope that helps any students who are worried about accommodation for Falmouth student, as I lived both at Glasney and the View last year, so know the draw backs of being miles away from your friends, but also how frustrating it is being so far away from real civilization, and proper pubs.

And the pubs are very good in Falmouth!
Hey, I've got an interview at Falmouth in 10 days (ahh) for animation, so admittedly its completely unrelated to this thread but like were your interviews informal or not? Because i'm just wondering how i should approach this really. hmm, i wasn't expecting the interview this soon so im panicking a bit! :s-smilie:
I have no idea, i think it was enviromental reasons? but there was rumours of it shutting down beforehand and being sold...so im honestly not sure. Totally gutted though, that was my monday favourite... I'm in the view! what flat were you in?

Erm, my interview wasn't exactly formal. i went in quite a smart top and jeans, it was all very laid back and casual really, however that was for english, so im honestly not sure. Just dress smart casual, (or just purely smart if you dont want to take the risk) and just talk about why you're interested in the course and what you want to do and what you can do ect  x
Just to butt in re: Rememdies - it was losing money, fast. They couldn't afford to be open for the very short amount of time that they were open - Mango Tango only just manages to stay afloat, and it's open about twice as long!

thanks very much for all that! i know that i love cornwall and i loved falmouth when i went for the open day, im just really worried that i will get bored with it for 3 years :/
Falmouth is nice. It was, and still is, difficult for me to adjust coming from London though. I hate not having things on your doorstep, even simply finding a free ATM is a mission and a half. The nightlife's alright, again very different to where I came from. I can imagine after three years you'd get bored of it though. I think I'm leaving, but because of my course not Falmouth. Falmouth is a lovely little uni just I had high expectations of my course and have been let down, sadly :frown:
Hi all!
I am also applying to UCF 2012 for english with creative writing, and it looks amazing! I don't think I will have a problem with the village feel, as I come from crappy little village! The town looks awesome and it looks perfect for a werdio like me

Don't worry about the UCAS stuff mine has not been sent yet! I swear my school ignore u if u don't appy to a russel grou uni!

Anyone else thinking of doing the same course? What other unis have you applied for? (I'm also YSJ!)

Haha..you do realise it's in my signature? :P I do photography. It's the most subscribed course in the whole uni, which means they seem to rest on their laurels and not really change the course too much even when many students aren't happy with the way it's structured. I know some people doing Journalism, they seem pretty happy with it

Yeh after going to 4 other open days (Bournemouth, Plymouth, UCL and Loughborough) i can safely say that UCF is both the best equipped and the best looking.

Thanks pinkfreekyfrog (great name btw) my mind has been put to rest a little :P yeh i totally agree at my sixth form its all oxbridge oxbridge medical and oxbridge, i come along with a creative course and they are just like yeh good luck with that.

Thank you! My sixth form is appalling, they supposedly stock all of the uni prospectus'...apaert from UCF, YSJ, Chichester and basically anything remotley creative! THey gave us p.s guidelines, but only for medical, vetinary and PPE.

Basically they hate self expression . lol

What course are you applying for?

i had the same issue when i moved down here, completely the same! :/
i came from coventry, which isn't as big as london, but is a city with always something on. my first few weeks drove me insane, i missed all the big lights and massive clubs, and just general city life. sometimes i still miss city life, but other times i love it here and dont want to go back to coventry! (i defo dont for christmas next week now :frown:) there is stuff on, you just have to find it and be more creative in keeping yourself busy. i was speaking to some 3rd years in a society i joined, who said they felt the exact same in their first term of the 1st year, and it gets easier and you get used to it as time goes on.

I know a few people doing journalism, and im doing english and creative writing/media myself, and i really love my course and my friends seem happy with journalism.

i chose to do english and media, and in the first year creative writing and media are mixed and you're taught both, which sorta sucks, because i hate the creative writing lectures! but next year i get to drop them and just study literacy studies and media which are very interesting.

Mmm fingers crossed I'll get used to it, it is quite a shock huh! Joining lots of socities etc which are fun  I'm just sad I'm not really enjoying my course as I do like Falmouth a lot.
HI!
Im hopefully going to FCU next September to study English and Creative Writing

Even though I'm predicted to get better grades than FCU is asking for, I am really excited about going there. I thought the Open Day on the 29th was brilliant and the English tutor was really inspirational (Plus his name was Nigel :P)

I would love to get to know people who are doing the same course as me before we start

Just reading back through the thread, I was really worried about being bored but it'll have to be what we make it. I'm always up for planning a party! Hopefully the people in my flat will be too
