AEAs are Advanced Extension Awards, which are exams you can do in addition to A-levels in order to 'stretch' you a little. Distinction would be the highest grade, I guess. There's Merit as well I think.

AFAIK medical schools don't make offers based on them - the only exception to that might be Oxbridge and I don't believe not having AEAs is any barrier to getting in there as not all schools offer them.

I've never heard of them anyway.
Someone on this forum has a birmingham offer incorporating one, but considering 50% or people fail them it's probably better that they're not put in offers. I didn't even put mine on my ucas form, although that was more to do with timings etc.
