What do you bloody expect? You're going to a third world country, doing something very dangerous and using third world equipment. They obviously don't have the means to look after their equipment and probably can't afford to repair or replace broken ropes.

This would never happen in the Uk or USA...

I don't think so, i believe most companies require you to get an dangerous activity extra on your insurance to be covered for things like bungee jumping, parachuting, firing a gun etc etc.
