I think they're tired of tourists going over there solely for the smoking opportunities, and feel like they have other things to offer.

According to a coffee shop owner I was talking to when I went over there, they are also fed up with tourists (especially Brits) going over there, having loads to drink, then having a smoke and throwing up on the floor etc. etc.

Looks like the British "bulldogs" have ruined it, as usual.

Not sure whether they are the actual reasons, but that's a couple of the ones that I've gathered...

This makes me quite sad, while it is true that I probably would never have bothered going if there weren't coffee shops I don't really see a problem with that as long as you're well behaved and try to do a few things other than go to coffee shops and McDonalds. (Then again it's your holiday so do as you please)

If there were no coffee shops/red light district then I don't feel it would be sufficiently different from the UK to warrant a visit in some ways.

My attitude is only based on my experience of visiting the place with my group of friends and having a nice quiet smoke with the occasional beer with maybe one or two touristy type things a day.

If they are really doing this because they don't want people like me to visit the country, behave responsibly and spend a shed load of money then so be it. It's their loss.

I think the actual reason given was something to do with people visiting for the day from neighbouring countries (Germany France etc.) to score some weed then and go home.

If you are a resident in the netherlands then you'll be able to get one of the weed passes apparently.
I've been twice. Last time we went to Anne Frank's house, Ajax stadium, ehh walked around the city a lot, went to the giant I Amsterdam sign, laughed at the Red Light district which is really hilarious and surreal, went to an awesome casino just across the road from the Marriott, went drinking and once went to a coffee shop but I didn't have any brownies. Also went to a sex show, hilarious. It's a very nice pleasant city, the waterways and houses are really beautiful. It's famous for its zoo but didn't go there. Drink was similar to Irish prices (so: fairly expensive) BUT the measures of vodka are ridiculous so much cheaper overall.

The amoiunt of bikes is odd, it's soo different. When crossing a road you have to cross the cycle lane, the actual road, and about 5 tramlines, then the other cycle lane before safety. Because cycle lanes are so underused in Dublin it does take a while to get used to not drifting into the cycle lane..you will get a lot of abuse if you do! It's a beautiful city to walk around and enjoy, great atmosphere. However every single touristy shop having such an emphasis on drugs and sex was sleazy.
Come on guys, Amsterdam was not all weed weed weed, or prostitute, those category exist in that city but its not all about that. It is weird being on that city as if those 2 categories slowly becomes normal in people's perspective as it is there 24/7. You wont feel bad about it as much as u do in here while you are there, like i did. But other than that, Amsterdam is a good place to visit, you should check it out.

Check this video here, it shows whats it like in Amsterdam: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OOh2erPKDbY

Yep. I'm 18 now, went when I was 13. All I remember is that they had nice sweets :dontknow:
Most of it actually isn't like the touristy bit, it's a regular place. Although the sex shops there are absolutely hilarious
Street red-light district, isn't it?)
