Better maths department, Notts or St Andrews

Hello, I was just wondering which is the better maths department between the two. Better as in more respectable amongst academics and.employers I suppose. I cannot decide between the two :/..

Thanks

I won't pretend I have much a clue at all on the respectability of departments... I imagine they're fairly similar.

St. Andrews rank much better than Nottingham for applied.

Though Nottingham is slightly ahead of St A's for pure...

That is if the RAE is a good indicator for academics, it may be just as flawed as all other league tables...
Because of the whole solar theory thing St Andrews has a big applied department that does a lot of research (vector calculus ftw). The pure department is very limited in its scope compared to other unis though the lecturers and modules are excellent. We have twice as many Applied members of staff as Pure and you can tell. I take stats so I don't have loads of contact with either.

I would check out the modules for yourself and see if they offer what you're interested in.
