Oh. I went to Anglia Ruskin University instead to study English Literature and Philosophy and I'm loving it so far! Sorry for the delay on that notice!

Bolton University has a poor reputation. I also live in Bolton but undertook both my degrees, (English and Law) outside of Bolton because there is a lot of snobbery about where your degree is from.
It is amongst worst Uni's in Britain, being close to the last 100. Known for its not affable city and relatively high crime rate. You are better off at Salford, even when it too, is considered quite dangerous, but campus and ranking are better. I live in Bolton and urge to get out, I cannot bear the scattered remains of Industral revolution. But it is my opinion. You pick what suits you best. But trust me, there are better things out there.

Oh please the league tables are generally misleading and biased. If you study a research degree, yes you have to care about how high your uni is on the ranking. Otherwise, stick with this uni. Its only problem is still new and therefore they think it's not good.
I studied in a "top 10" uni and seriously now I work under supervision of my boss who did his part time degree in Westminster!

Hello,

I have to agree with you, there is a lot of people who come to our University and are in professional management positions within huge companies and organisation’s across the UK. We have had student go onto work for Sony.
In 2013 the University of Bolton was named one of the safest campuses in the region meaning that it is safer than some of the University's in the surrounding areas. You don't have to take my word for it. Take a look at this news article:

http://www.theboltonnews.co.uk/news/crime/10571365.Students_at_University_of_Bolton_are_among_safest_in_region/?action=complain&cid=11842719

We strive to be the best at what we do and in our specialist areas we are in the top 10 in the country for student satisfaction and also for employment after University.

We strive to ensure all of our graduates are industry ready before they leave and we have the facilities and resources available to provide all of our graduates with the skills they need from our careers and employability department. This is anything from help to fill out applications to mock interviews.

Some of the subjects we excel in are as follows:

Our Art, Design and Media department is in the top 15 for student satisfaction (Complete University Guide 2014)

Our Health and Social Care courses offer excellent graduate prospects with over 95% of students going onto further study of work within six months of leaving University in 2013 (www.unistats.gov.uk)

Our Biology courses are 2nd in Greater Manchester for Graduate Prospects and within the top 15 for the whole of the UK (Complete University Guide 2014)

In Law and Accountancy over 90% of our graduates went onto further study or full time work within six months of leaving University in 2013 (www.unistats.gov.uk)

Our Engineering department were within the top 20 for student satisfaction in 2014 (Complete University Guide 2014)

???

Your link to www.unistats.gov.uk goes nowhere.

I think you'll find it's
http://unistats.direct.gov.uk/

Your stats also seem misleading, to say the least.

Here's what Unistats says today in October 2014:

BA Hons Law
75% go on to work and/or further study

LLB
75% go on to work and/or further study

ABA Hons Accountancy
70% go on to work and/or further study

Not sure whether that's spectacularly good or bad, but
...
Law and Accountancy
"over 90% of our graduates went onto further study or full time work within six months..."

HOW do you make that out? You could just be using old and out of date stats?
Please do let us know.

And, please, let's have more INDEPENDENT views on whether Bolton university is any good or not.

Again, Why keep on quoting old stats? - whatever happened in 2013 it's been and gone.

I suggest everyone has a look at the latest figures
http://www.thecompleteuniversityguide.co.uk/crime-in-university-cities/#Englandwales

They show that in 2013-14 the following North West Universities came out as "safer" than Bolton -
Edge Hill, Cumbria and Lancaster.

Don't believe the marketing bods, everyone.
University of Bolton is one of the best small Universities to go. The campus itself is walking distance from student accommodation, located very near to supermarkets and the town center. Transport in and around the area is amazing, and having moved from Sussex to Bolton I immediately reveled in the difference. Manchester is twenty minutes away by train, and it is cheap to live here.

In terms of Fresher's week/fairs/activities, it is one of the best things to get involved with. It sounds cliche, but I am a small-town and incredibly shy girl. As soon as I got to my halls (Orlando Village, 10 minutes walk from the University), I was told by a 'Fresher's Legend' what was happening at Fresher's that year and highly encouraged to go down to the common room, where I went with my flatmates, and met the current SU President and a current Fresher's legend. I had never been clubbing before University, and that night was the first time, but I was immediately made to feel very welcome and it was not a few weeks before my social anxiety began, slowly but surely, to fade.

In terms of the facilities, I knew the University was small seeing as I got in through clearing, but it was recommended for my course (Creative Writing), due to the fact that it has the Octagon Theatre, Salford and Manchester BBC very close by. I believe that the University being small has many benefits, one being that the staff have more time for you as an individual. There is obviously a great focus from staff on including everyone. The staff and programme leaders, peer mentors, volunteers, 'fresher's legends', course reps and academic course reps are just fantastic.

My advice to you is to not prejudge. Every University is different. I got in through Clearing, but the truth is I wasn't going to go through Clearing until this came up on my emails. I was meaning to re-do my A levels, but I am glad I didn't. If the University feels right for you and you jump right in to University life then you will more than reap the rewards.
Hi Sarah,

I am really glad you have found your feet so quickly and are taking part in a lot of the activities the University has to offer.

2013 was only last September and the statistics are relevant as they are from our last intake of students. We are very proud of some of the achievements we have made over the past few years at The University of Bolton and we would like to celebrate them. Everyone is entitled to their opinion and we have some very successful students who are very happy at this University. Just like any other University there will be some students who are unhappy but as a University we try our very best to accommodate everyone as best we can.

We have found our statistics on the websites and I have referenced them next to the facts I have found and from each website.

If anyone is thinking about coming to the University and wants some further information please do not hesitate to contact us and we will set up a campus tour, a chance to speak with your lecturers and some of the students.

Hi Aimee,

Please could you clarify what proportion of your recent law graduates ('90% in work of further education after 6 months') have gone on to undertake either the LPC or BPTC or are now working in the legal profession as Solicitors or Barristers?

Many thanks,
Scott
Hi Scott,

It is lovely to hear from you.

We do not have any firm statistics from last year yet as they will not have been released however, I know that our law tutors have an excellent and strong relationship with our graduates and when I asked one of them if they had any information he sent me a list of where some of our graduates had ended up and sure enough we had some on the LPC course and there were a few paralegals.

The best advice I can give you is for you to attend the Open Day on the 22nd November and our Law lecturers will be able to give you a better insight as to what the graduates are up to at the moment.

Our Employability department will also have some information about what our graduates are up to and they will be able to offer you a further insight on the Open Day also.

You can book onto our Open Day by following the link below:

Please let me know if you would like any further help.

Whilst we can argue about the age of data, September 2014 is arguably newer and more reliable than September 2013.

I think when selecting a university the employment rates and league tables are only really generalised measures and don't reflect other criteria, yes I studied at Bolton, I selected it because it was recommended! Do I regret it - absolutely not! The staff where fantastic and the course was excellent. However, to progress my career I did have to study for a second degree at another university with the correct accreditations.

Looking back at the employment issue, in my field we will only employ students who attain 2.1 degrees or higher, so realistically only 50% of graduates would be employed from Cambridge, Manchester or indeed Bolton. The only issue for Bolton is we insist that graduates hold RICS accredited degrees, which unfortunately Bolton (and a number of others) do not provide, so regretably we and the majority of other major construction practices cannot recruit from the university.

Should this put you off - no it should not, you will get more support at Bolton than anywhere. When I graduated, those with good degrees had no problems in the job market. Please don't worry about league tables and other generic measures, go with recommendations from past students, we are not paid to recommend the university we do so because it was and still is excellent.

Hi Mel_Y

Thank you for your reply. It is always great to hear from graduates as I'm a recent one myself.

We thrive on our small and friendly atmosphere, which is why our student satisfaction is high and we're always looking to build on it. We also provide careers services to students throughout their studies and also available to them for three years after graduation so they're always welcome to come back and take advantage of it, which I did numerous times before/after attending interviews. The University is always happy to see our graduates return, which is why many are employed at the University or have the opportunity to apply for our Internship schemes and gain valuable experience straight after graduation.

We are always looking at ways to develop and provide opportunities, we currently have the new University Technology College to be build by September 2015. Thereafter, work on our new Centre of Performance Engineering will also be underway. The town itself Is also having a restructure and we hope everyone is there to be part of it.

Hi everyone

My name is simi and I'm currently a student at the university of Bolton and I came to England from Ireland in 2013 to attend university in Bolton. As a student I will tell you it's great here, It's diverse and you will find people here to be open minded and free and will make you feel very welcome. I enjoy my course and my tutors always have time for me especially if I struggle in any particular area about my course and they never fail to help me or any student in preparation or understanding my assignments or assessments. There are so many benefits here, like the fact the university owns a massive sports centre(Bolton one) and the student benefit from all the activities that are held in the centre( Bolton one) everyday of the week such as team sports to fitness classes and much more and for information please check the website and it's Free as long as your a student of Bolton university. As long as I've been here, I haven't felt unsafe in anyway and I believe that the statistics don't do justice to this university because the university is recently new and all the facility's are quite modern. In the end it's up to you to choose a place and university that you feel like you can grow as a person and educationally.

Bolton University is the worst in the country building and staff. They teach you something and the exam and the assignment is totally different specially civil engineering. They give you huge handouts and they don't even cover 10% of it. I wouldn't recommend it (from 3 years personal experience)

Hi Alex

Sorry to hear about your experiences. Civil Engineering is one of our oldest and well established programmes in the region so I am surprised your experience hasn't been up to par. Can I ask when you studied here?

The University is going through a positive gradual change with a new National Engineering Centre to be built for September 2016 and we have just risen up in rankings.

Hi there,

Well firstly, Alex isn't my real name as I'm still student at Bolton, I'm graduating this year. It is my personnel opinion anyway and I'm entitled to say what is right, I'm sure ove 80% of students have the same opinion. I have 30 students working with me on a website asking students to go somewhere else to study which will be live within a week.
Good luck !

Hi mate,

I don't think I need to do anything like that. I am student if you wish you can come and see me next year when you back.

I have also been student officer in SU, which is run by students for students. If you have any problems you can always go and see Arthur Kaddu who is SU president.

So please don't say I am fake account.
