Take a deep breath and don't be nervous, at Newman we're all really friendly.

As a drama student you might be interested in a few societies such as MaDSoc and Harmonics.

Are you a halls students or living at home?

You are exactly the person I need!!! So basically- I am hoping to apply there to newmans for psychology and counselling.
What do you think of the course? Also, what work experience did you do which you put down on your statement?

I am going through ucas extra and this is literally my last chance for this year (cry) and I am PRAYING that I get through!!
Anyone and everyone, please help!!

I am applying to Newmans- Birmingham to do Psychology and counselling: what is the course like, what did you include in your personal statement, best accommodation, night life/social life?

Any form of details would be muchly appreciated!!

Thanks

Hi Hannah, i study at Newman although i don't do psychology and counselling the teaching and living environment around Newman is really friendly; as it is a small campus you get to know a lot of people and lecturers also get to know you so you feel like you can approach them about anything at all which is encouraged by Newmans open door policy. To find more information about your course you can go onto newman.ac.uk and search for it and this page will give you all the information you need.

In regard to living and accommodation if you decided to live on campus the halls of residence are on on site so you only have to walk 2 minutes to get to a lecture. Accommodation cost £3800 for a shared bathroom landing or £5000 for an en-suite room but within the price bills are included, free WiFi is included and contents insurance. I decided to live at home at home and commute into uni but didn't feel like i missed out on anything because i still took part and got involved in everything it completely up too you whether you want to commute or live in either way you don't miss out.

The social life is really good, Newman has its own bar which is open everyday and there are always different themed event on organised by the students union such as neon parties, disney parties all sorts, something for everyone. But if the bar is not the thing for you there are also really good transport links which can get you into the city centre in 20 - 30 minutes which has everything from restaurants, cinemas, bowling, shopping and night clubs. Newman also runs a number of societies made ad run by the students if you want to socialise and get involved in activities on campus such as the drama society, harmonics, gaming and sports societies..

hope this has helped. if you have anymore questions feel free to ask

I'm so sorry! I've only just seen this!!
I'm doing single honours psych but my friends are doing psych with counselling and they love it. You have a mixture of psych lectures and a few counselling. In counselling there is more case study work and in psych there are a lot of research reports. So you get a mixture of everything.

It's a really good course. Because it's a small uni, the lecturers are always there if you need anything and most of the time you can just knock on their door if you have any questions! There is also lots of workshops to help you with critical thinking, referencing etc. the careers team at Newman are also amazing and really helpful!

In terms of the experience that I put down on my statement, I just wrote about the work experience I had done in year 10, which was in a nursery and in a school. I also wrote about the work experience I had done in a special school. If you don't have much experience, write about any experience you do have (even if you think it's not relevant to psych) and explain how the skills you have learnt will help you on the psych course and how it will help you achieve future goals. As long as you apply your experience to the psych course, you'll be fine!

Also, I just wanted to say, absolutely do not worry if you don't get in this year!! I had to take two gap years (because I didn't pass maths) and although I didn't want to at the time, I'm so glad I had that extra time to focus myself on what I really wanted to do. Having that extra time meant that I had to watch my other friends at uni while I was working and praying that I got in the following year. But I'm not going into my third year, applying for my masters and having a healthcare job. Having that little break from education allowed me to realise that psychology really is the route for me. I have never worked so hard in anything but this course and it has paid off for me, I really don't think I would be as happy and succeeding if it wasn't for my gap years!

I really hope this helps and feel free to message me with any other questions you have:smile:

Hope to see you around Newman in September!
