What is the EU Transparency Register?

Hi, please could someone explain to me what this actually is and the purpose of it.

It's a register of those who are lobbying in the parliament and/or commission. It doesn't require political parties, religious bodies or sub-state government (like the Scottish Government or a council) to register but all NGOs, trade unions, think tanks etc. are 'expected' to register. They don't have to register but there are benefits to registering to encourage them. They get an ebullient about topics they are interested in and you must be on the register to get a long term pass to enter the building you'd expect to find MEPs in.

Those on the register agree to a set of rules which are designed to uphold a level of fairness and decency consistent with democracy. It provides a place where EU citizens can go to look at who is lobbying about what- making the lobbying more transparent.

It never actually came up in my uni EU courses so don't consider it particularly important.
