Transition chemistry work - help!

There are 2 questions I am stuck on - anyone have any ideas?

1. how does Mg and MgCl2 conduct electricity, but Cl2 doesn't?
2 Why does MgCl2 have a high melting point, but Cl2 is a gas?

Mg = delocalised electrons
MgCl2 = ions
Cl2 = covalent, no free electrons
