I looked into the field trip side of things and I found a FAQ PDF from the University of Glasgow on the Earth science degree. Apparently there will be trips to Arran, Mull, Ardnamurchan and Oban and there are optional trips to North East England and Southern Spain. Those western Scotland locations sounds really great to me. It also mentioned a few subject combinations, like Earth science - Geography - Archaeology, Earth science - Biology - Chemistry, that kind of thing. Archaeology would be good because it would be Scottish archaeology I think. I don't even know English archaeology so I am really intrigued. Exeter did get my qualifications. I also sent them to Glasgow; all I have to do is make them the firm choice and I am all signed up. The travel aspect of geology is a big plus for me, certainly since I got interested in Earth science through backpacking and travel.

They all sound fantastic, I've been to a few places on the west coast but to surf!! the west coast of Scotland is absolutely stunning  ahh okay that sounds really good, I love how theres so much variety with this course and you can specialise after 2nd year which is a good amount of time to decide what you are super interested in! Yeah Scottish archaeology would be so cool to learn about, where is it your from? yay thats good then, so exciting  That's same here for the travel aspect, once you've got the travel bug it never goes away haha! Thats so so cool, where did you go backpacking to?!

"Where did you go?" - the dreaded question of any seasoned traveller , haha. Too many places to write about here though I guess I could write more in my profile. I did 7 years of solid backpacking and hitchhiking, and a lot of wild camping and roughing it in-between, with a few hostel and volunteer jobs just to keep myself in food and a bed (and free parties). Nice life though. But I love rocks, fossils and magmas too. Now I figure geology and travel make the best combination - it is all out there, so if you have itchy feet and an affinity for studying (and enjoying) awesome geological locations, you can't go wrong with an Earth science degree. I just think Scotland is the best natural laboratory for studying, and also probably has the best universities and cities. I did see a lot of South America, North America, Asia, Europe and some of the Middle East. Bolivia and Iceland really struck a cord and kind of triggered my interest in landforms. I took it from there and did a little study, now I'm hooked.

And oh, I am from a small town near Southport on the northwest coast of England, kind of where West Lancashire and Merseyside converge.

I really want to do that after uni! I am so jealous of you going to Iceland, it looks so nice! I'd love to go kayaking under the glaciers there, as well as seeing everything else!! Thank you, that means a lot. Most people just tell me to grow up, get a real job and settle down. I just shoot them the finger and tell them to take a hike :colone: I started out in Ukraine, then Scandinavia and somehow ended up in Canada, and after that it just sort of went out of control. After that I just winged it. Planning and travel never go together if you want to be spontaneous, so my advice would be "don't plan". Study is different, but with the Glasgow degree there is flexibility, and that appeals to my responsive nature. More and more I am pulled towards Glasgow. In Iceland I just trekked up from Rejkjanes and tried to hitch as far north as I could. The scenery there really is otherworldly. I just wasn't in love with the whole the-Sun-never-really-sets-in-the-summer thing. But you have to go there. You know, on the Glasgow degree apparently there are independent mapping projects, and I think it is possible to choose a location, thing is we must fund it mostly by ourselves. Still, I can get a bursary. I am rather glad that I did not make it to Australia and those islands, since I could try for a year out there on this degree. Gives me an idea. I had flights out to Fiji and Samoa, but I ended up taking a detour to Taiwan and Malaysia instead. Never mind, some other time...

Glasgow is big I guess, for Scotland, but I have been in bigger. Still I guess it will be a big change. With Glasgow there would be so much variety for me. I have lived in a few large cities around the world, so Glasgow would be more comfortable and affordable. I live in a small seaside town right now, but it is only temporary between travel and study. I just cannot wait to get started. Have you never lived in a large city?

Your attitude is brill, life's way too awesome to just sit around and do boring stuff!! You have to get out there an explore!! Awesome, Scandinavian country's look beautiful, especially Norway!! I'd love to live in like a wee lodge or something in Canada and hit the slopes every day, would be so cool! Simple yet adventurous lifestyle  I'll definitely take your advice, thank you!! If you want to go you should definitely go for it, but by the sounds of your travels you'll definitely go for it! Fantastic, that must have been beautiful. I'm definitely going to go!! I've got like a wee map and I've put pinpoints on all the places I want to go  Ahhh Noway that is amazing, I never knew we could possibly choose the location! I also saw that too, and theres other cool places on the study abroad programme like Hong Kong, California and New Zealand, and many others too:biggrin: so amazing, love how you just go for it!!

Its such a beautiful city, the only downside is that its far away from a beach :frown: hahaha can't base my choice around the sea though I suppose! Thats awesome, I'm sure you will get on great if you go there! Seaside towns are my favourite, especially Cornwall! and I haven't lived in a large city, but I go to cities quite a lot and love the feel of them, so hopefully I'll get on ok!

You're totally right about life. Most people I grew up with, including family, were more concerned with keeping life nice and safe and boring, as you said, just as a way to get through life all pretty and in one piece. Me, I want to roll into my grave all burned up and worn out saying "wow, what a ride!" Honestly, I just got tired of staring at maps on my bedroom wall after I got out of college and did a little work for some money to travel, so I figured there was nothing for it but to give it a try. I guess you just know when something feels right for you. Yer, New Zealand and Australia look good. Hong Kong would be good but I wondered at first "geology trip to HK?" but I could definitely stay out there for a while. If I ever eat noodles now it is only in the Far East; they just do not cut it over here in Europe.

I'm always interested in American students trying to cross the pond. Why is it that you want to leave the USA?

Yeah, Glasgow was my first choice!

I also applied to Edinburgh, Heriot Watt, Strathclyde and Dundee, but haven't heard from them yet. Where else did you apply?

Awesome, I've applied to almost exactly the same unis but with Aberdeen instead of Heriot Watt. Got an offer from Strathclyde about the same time as Glasgow

Struggling to decide between Edinburgh and Glasgow as my first choice but having that offer from Glasgow is a big relief
