Thai Government Overthrown

Have searched and couldnt find anything on it, am currently staying in Bangkok for first part of ma gapyear working at a very well known international school. But, got back from a friends school last night to find heightened security, and the roads empty for a change, even the famous Sukhumvit road which is always packed, and most of the vehicles i past were military vehicles. Then get rudely awakened  by a mate who said the school is closed cos of this:

Small riots have broken out in places accross the capital, but nothing too serious, and the army has ordered all schools and banks to close. So i now have the next few days off, woohooo! But cant leave the campus, guards making sure everyones escorted everywhere

On the news it all looks strangely calm. I hadn't heard anything about riots.

Don't worry. The Prime Minister is very much disliked by everybody other than a few rural types. This action is supported by the people and the King has pretty much given his blessing on this. In Thailand the King is held in very very high regard by almost everybody.

I love it how "hammond in critical condition in hospital" has 117 posts, and "Thai Government Overthrown" has 6/7

The Hammond thread is the only one still open (the others have been locked and the Top Gear thread doesn't count) whereas there are threads on this elsewhere - here, for example:

Even so, the Hammond story has had more interest, yeah.

the reason why ur not hearing much is cos the military took over the tv stations from the PM when they overthrew him, and 17 years ago when this last happened the media ran riot and mass panic followed. So a media blackout has been placed, most international calls are monitored, and some local calls as far as im aware, nothings been fired yet and a temporary law has been passed so groups of 5 or more acting suspisious or loitering can be arrested and spend 6 months in prison, so not too many riots last night lol! Most of the farmers and rural areas though are turning sour, they all supported the PM's ideas, he helped them more than those in the capital, but this has been brewing since the PM sold off his shares in the telecoms buisness he set up and made 1.9billion dollers tax free, going against what he said.

Oh and over here in thailand, noones heard about Hammond, that was shock news to me!
