You can ask the lecturers if there's something about the assignment you don't understand... for advice on actually producing academic writing, e.g. how to reference, there's the librarians who aren't (as is commonly assumed) just there to stack the shelves - they've got Masters and often PhD's therefore extreme study skills knowledge which they're IME happy to pass on. and they don't hide from students like lecturers. At the very least the librarians will be able point you at the correct referencing system for your course.
