This is the laptop most students want to buy next

If you were buying a laptop tomorrow, which brand would you go for? That's the question we asked you in our big Loved By Students survey...and the results are in.

This one wasn't even close, Apple took first place by miles. In second was HP, while Acer took third spot.

The likes of Samsung, Dell and Lenovo were much further down the list.

I have a HP at the moment and not surprised by the results.

Edit: The HP is a good laptop to have.

I wouldn't touch any of their laptops with a barge pole, though I could say the same of most PC manufacturers.

Only chumps buy laptops based on their brand. How HP even got near second is beyond me with their horrid TN panels they're so fond of and poor QC

Also, just because TSR users prefer specific brands doesn't necessarily equate to "Best laptops for students".

Exactly....thats why we have this section of the forum so we can advice people.

I don't ever recall these surveys, not to mention the lack of choice, what happened to custom laptops, MSi, Gigabyte, Cube, Novatech, etc

Probably only surveyed them on the major OEM brands who all quite frankly suck compared to custom built manufacturers. HP, Dell, Lenovo, Asus and Acer all make mostly terrible, cheap parts machines. Apple is a smidge better in my books purely because I enjoy OS X but they get beaten into the ground by any custom built machine. Thank goodness for the comment section so that we can advise people away from the toxic brands.

I like how in the poll each brand has a "Buy now" button, like someone's going buy a laptop based on that poll.

It looks silly, but if I ran TSR, I'd do exactly the same xD

To be fair, most people who buy laptops just want something that works out the box which is light and portable, so aren't interested in upgrades or tinkering with their specifications. Custom built laptops are bulkier and heavier than MacBooks and ultrabooks, so aren't particularly appealing to most students.

Actually guys just to add to this the MacBook Pro won the official "Best windows laptop" in 2013.

Yes that's right, a Macbook with Windows installed is considered the best and most stable Windows laptop.

Even better this award was not based on votes, but on the number of crashes, bugs etc...

just shows where the majority of students priorities lie really, i'm fairly sure if they were spending their own money, an overpriced apple product wouldn't be their first choice.

I spent my own money on a MacBook Pro. The build quality is brilliant, there's nothing that comes close to it on the market that isn't similarly priced. Plus I like OS X.

If you're looking at the 13" models and don't need the absolute thinnest laptop possible, the Pro is the best way to go in my opinion. The 128GB Air with 8GB RAM upgrade (something most people should consider since you can't upgrade it yourself) costs £929 compared to £999 for the same spec Pro (ignore the non-retina Pro btw, it's pretty garbage at this point). That £70 gets you a gorgeous display compared to the fairly pedestrian one on the Air, a much more powerful processor without much of a loss of battery life, more connectivity options, and several other smaller advantages. Definitely worth the extra bit of expense if you're not trying to shed as many millimetres and grams as possible. If you are, the 11" Air (and the new MacBook, if you can live with its shortcomings) should be what you should be looking at anyway.

Build quality is good, but in terms of similarly priced laptops, I can show you plenty of laptops for £999 that have far superior specs.

For example, Fangbook Edge from cyberpower, 16gb ram, configurable to 4k screen, i-7 4th gen cpu, GeForce GTX 970M graphics card, oh did I mention you can overclock it from 2.5 to 3.7 Ghz? all this at 0.78" thick with a 15.6" screen.

£999

Or custom building any laptop with specs higher than a Macbook on pcspecialist.co.uk would get you more bang for your buck.

If you like the OS then fair enough, but to say there isn't anything close when there are things far in advance for the same money is ridiculous.

TL;DR: You are paying for the brand with apple laptops, search alternatives.

When I bought my Dell, I did get carried away with some specs I thought I would need but didn't fully end up using or doing justice to. I'd call myself a basic user - (word processing, browsing the internet and watching video) - who only occasionally tinkers around with Photoshop. Do you think the Pro still makes sense for a user like me?

The non-retina Pro is unbelievably cheap right now in India (approx. £ 620) - the only reason I'd consider it coupled with the fact that it comes with an optical drive and 500GB storage.

The gorgeous displays on the Retina Pro line are obviously a huge advantage given that I'd be using my machine to watch a lot of media content but the price tags are a major put-off. How much does one save with the Education discount in the UK?

The 11'' models are definitely out. I wouldn't be comfortable with a computer that tiny.
