Laptops

I need to buy a laptop for uni, but really unsure what I should get. MacBook Pro looks great - but expensive. However, don't want to buy a really cheap one that is useless when I get there. What do most undergrads go for? Size as well please...

I think the MacBook Air could be a better option, as it’s more handy for students due to its lightweight and portable nature. Unless your course requires a particularly large amount of advanced software and applications, an Air should be just fine.

I'm thinking about a Macbook Air for Economics, does this sound like a safe bet?

Should be ok, but I don’t know too much about that course so maybe you should double check with your course director or something

There’s really not too much of a difference, either should be fine imo

Hi,

I'm a second-year chemistry student. I have a Macbook Pro 13inch. The pro does more than enough and is not really necessary. Most people have airs and it achieves exactly the same. I chose the Macbook because I wanted it to be able to interchange with my iPad. However, any laptop that can run the software that your uni uses like microsoft 365 and any extras your degree requires will work just fine. No one else is looking at what laptop you have so choose one that works for you and not what you think looks best or what other people have. Some people have laptops with touchscreens so it can double as a tablet which I think is a good idea actually.

The 13inch is great for carrying around because it's not too small or big most of the time and it fits in my backpack nicely. I didn't want a big backpack to fit a 15inch laptop. That being said, I tend to use the uni computers or a desktop to complete some pieces of work because sometimes it's nice to have a larger screen when doing detailed work.

Maybe speak to someone at a tech shop like Currys and they could advise you with more specialised knowledge of more computers. I can only speak from my own experience.
