How is an extended Essay in History different to a historical investigation?

Please outline the differences between the Extended Essay in history and the format of a historical investigation.

I've heard that the Extended Essay has a "less explicit" reference to the sources compared to the historical investigation?

The historical investigation is really structured. You have to do a plan of investigation, summary of evidence, an evaluation of two sources, analysis and conclusion. The EE has fewer set parts; you don't need a formal POI (it'll just fit into your regular introduction), you don't have to do a summary of evidence, there's no source evaluation. In terms of structure for an EE all the IB requires is an introduction, an analysis and a conclusion. It's up to you to decide how to format those bits, so you've got a lot more freedom than you do in the historical investigation.

There's also obvious differences like the fact that the EE is longer, you'll need more sources, you'll go into much more detail.
