Can you get couples accommodation if you're a first year?

Is it possible for you to get couples accommodation on your first year? Also will it be okay if my partner doesn't attend the university?
Why on earth would any Uni provide subsidised housing for a non-student?

You'll have to look for a private rented room or flat : http://student.spareroom.co.uk/

Yeah it should be fine although ask the uni, your partner would have to pay council tax though and you'd be much better off just renting a one bed apartment privately as they're cheaper, closer to uni, bigger, more modern, and just generally a lot nicer.

Very, very few Unis have ANY double room accommodation and even if they do, this will be reserved for older/postgrad students, particularly those from overseas. Forget any idea of this - look at private rentals.

Very few maybe, but given the forum I'm pretty sure we're talking about the University of Sheffield, which does provide them and in fact has quite a lot of couples/families accommodation, of which there's 72 couples studios for undergrad only, which is about 1/80th of the incoming student population and she'll get preference for those places seeing as she'd be applying as a couple. She has a decent chance of getting it, although private rentals will be better and probably cheaper.

Yes you can - it's called Laddow and it's in Ranmoor. I would advise you strongly against it - the apartments are TINY and you're stuck with a double bed right next to your fridge and cooker.

You're better off finding a flat somewhere, it's cheaper as well. Laddow is about ~7,000 a year. They don't really care if your partner is a non-student but then they are liable to pay council tax and some other fees. Basically you pay for the room and not how many people are in it.

Remember priority here goes to non first years and internationals.
