University of Hull - Student Life / Night Life

One area which you might like to know about when moving to Hull is what the student life is like.

There are loads of great places which students can visit - with many cafes, pubs, bars, clubs, shops etc. based on campus, and around the surrounding area, including Cottingham Road, Beverley Road, Newland Avenue and Princes Avenue as well as within the city centre in Hull's Old Town, Humber Street and Hull Marina. Additionally, there's theatres, museums, clubs and much more.

WHAT IS AVAILABLE TO ME ON CAMPUS?
On our campus, there is a variety of Cafes which you can grab a quick bite to eat or a hot/cold drink such as a hot chocolate, perfect for when you need a quick break from studying. My personal favourite place to grab a drink is the Arts Café in Middleton Hall but there are also cafes in the Business School, Allam Medical Building, Library, Canham Turner and Wilberforce- so you've got a lot to choose from!

You can also get meals on campus during the day, there's plenty of options catering for all different requirements! The mini-supermarket on campus does meal deals and offers hot food (such as burgers and sausage rolls), but if you're after a sit-down meal then there's The Pantry in Canham Turner, or several options in the Students' Union, Sanc, Eats and Eats Italia, which serve pub grub and pizza.

During the week our student bar, Sanc, also hosts activities, such as a weekly quiz and even some karaoke which can be really fun to visit with friends.
More information is available on the university website here.
Student Union events can be found listed on the union website here.

CAFES AND BARS
There are a series of cafes which you can visit such as Planet Coffee, Barista, Artisan and Zoo to name a few (although there are plenty of others), these cater for all needs, with Zoo offering exclusively vegetarian and vegan options. Another popular place with students is Caffe Gelato which sells ice cream, pancakes and waffles all year round, they also offer student discount!

There are several restaurants around campus too. If Pizza is your thing, there's Craft & Dough which often has special offers during the week- including all you can eat pizza! There's also a series of global cuisines available such as Da Gianni Italian Restaurant, The Greek, Marrakech Avenue and El Toro, so whatever you're in the mood food, you've got plenty of options.

In the evenings there are a series of bars available such as Roots and Tofts. There there is also the night club Piper if clubbing is your thing. If you would rather play board games with some mates there is also The Boardroom Cafe which is opening during the day and evenings.

PUBS
In addition to the pub on campus, Sanc, there are numerous pubs which students visit in the local area and the city. Directly opposite the university is Old Grey Mare, further up the road, there is The Gardeners Arms and Haworth Arms. Down Beverley road, towards the city centre, there's Harry Pursey and The Bevvy. There are also plenty of pubs open in the old town too, including the Lion & Key (arguably serving the best fish and chips in Hull)

THINGS TO DO IN THE CITY CENTRE
If shopping is your thing, there's plenty of options in the city, with the two largest shopping centres, St Stephens and Princes Quay, having all of the big names you'd expect, in addition to a cinema, games arcade and rock climbing facility.

If you're feeling a little more cultural, then you can visit the city's museums and art galleries. These include the Hull and East Riding Museum and the Street Life Museum and are free to visit!.

I couldn't mention things to do in Hull without touching on The Deep. The Deep is an aquarium located in the city centre, housing over 5000 animals, including sharks, turtles, penguins and rays! It is a conservation charity working to protect the oceans. The Deep isn't too expensive to visit (£15.50) and a ticket lasts a whole year, meaning you can go as many times as you like!

In the evenings there's plenty to do in the city centre, whether this is a trip to one of the cinemas, bowling, an escape room, or even a visit to the theatre to watch a touring production at one of Hull's fabulous venues (New Theatre, City Hall or Hull Truck).

There also some great venues for music acts/performers, including the Bonus Arena which has had performances from big names, including George Ezra, Kaiser Chiefs, and Jack Whitehall. There are also smaller venues such as The Welly, Asylum and The Adelphi Club.

During the summer, there are also some festivals in Hull such as Humber Street Sesh, Pride in Hull, and Freedom Festival.

CLUBS
In Hull, you're always sure of a good night out, not only is there something for everyone, but the drinks are also really cheap!

My favourites are:
1) Asylum- The club on campus, exclusively for students! This is always a fun night out and filled with sports teams and societies who often have themed nights.

2) Piper - A really popular choice for students, especially on a Monday night. This club is only a 10-minute walk away from campus too, making it really convenient to get to!

3) The Welly- The Welly is popular with students and those local to Hull, it primarily plays indie and alternative music but often has themed nights out, including an 80s night!

In the city centre, there's Fuel and Atik as well as Spiders.

If you've still got questions about what there is to do in Hull, then please add them below or chat with one of our students on our Ask a Student page.
