Thats ok, glad to help anyone applying for medicine, I know how stressful it is. Many of these questions are also in this book, along with suggested ways to approach and answer them. If your college has a Careers section like mine did, go and search the bookshelves for it.
awesome stuff lu! How is Leicester treating you?

I'm not there yet! Starting in 11 days, but the nerves are starting to kick in :o: You and Warwick?

Very good, very good, it's very hardcore at the moment. Had a week and we've done case scenarios and lots of biochem. Yay! But it's 9-5 and all that jazz, which makes me very tired!

We're now sworn enemies really, having previously been joined as Leicester-Warwick :P (well the graduate courses were anyway)

This is as a reaction to the number of interview threads popping up recently. Ask all your questions about what to wear, when you'll hear from them, what to say etc. I'll be closing/merging all new threads from now on (though please report any that I miss, as my internet access is somewhat limited!)

A couple of quick points:

Do not mention interviewers by name. Googling them and finding out their specific interests will not help you. Interviewers read this site and we don't want them to find anything bad!

Similarly, don't give specific questions you were asked (apart from the generic "Why Medicine" type.)

Please use your common sense and read the rest of the thread before repeating a question that's already been answered.

DON'T PANIC!!! I cannot emphasise this enough.

Good luck!

I just received a letter from bham uni saying that I've got an interview on the 24th October at 9:45 am and i need help plz!!!

Anyone already had an interview at the uni? Their website states that they tend to be around 15 mins, and some people i know say that the questions are mostly focused on hobbies and work experience. :frown:

If you've had an interview, what kind of questions do they ask? How did your interview go? Did u get an offer? How do i dress? - (i'm a girl, if u dont know that already!)

Also, do they ask about current issues or about illnesses or extra reading that you've done? Is it intimidating? From what i've heard, there are usually 3 or 4 people on the panel... when u go in, do u shake all their hands or just one person's hand? :s-smilie:

I know it's a lot of questions, but I'm really stressed out! Not having a lot of confidene in myself or experience at previous interviews doesn't really help either.

wow that was quick. I'm not doing medicine myself but from talks in assemblies and stuff just read up on all current affairs related to medicine. Learn your personal statement back to front and prepare answers for whatever they can ask you about on it. If you've done work exp (which i'd expect you have since you're doing medicine :P) make a note of all of them or as many as you can and make some notes about what you like from each one and what you learnt. It's no good just listing your work experience without saying what you've learnt from it. You will never know what exactly they will ask you so prepare in every possible way.

And about hand shakes. The person holding the interview offers the hand shake and you give one. Wait until you are told to sit before you do so as well
Calm down.

Well done, though!

Look on the internet for mock interview questions (or indeed our fin TSR Wiki). Ask someone at school for a mock interview. Read internet sites. Read New Scientist and sBMJ, etc.

ohhh good luck! mine's on the 27th as well.
Hey, I’ve got a few questions to begin with:

- How colloquial is too colloquial? I’ve been doing a bit of practise just talking in front of a mirror lately and have found myself just talking quite casually, yet honestly. I feel it’s important for me to be myself in order to get into the zone and feel comfortable otherwise I feel I’d come across as more reserved and hold things back. When I say colloquial, I’m referring to saying whatever comes from the heart rather than spending a good moment devising a response on the spot. Do I play it safe or just go in as myself and hope for the best?

- What actually happens on the day of an interview? I am aware that there are campus tours…etc on the day and the odd lecture but I’m really not looking forward to waiting in a room amongst the competition. (That’s if I even get an interview!) Can you share any tips on getting through that psychological obstacle?

On the interviews point - particularly for whole interview days - when interviewers may well cycle through a pool of questions. Please don't reveal them - either openly or through PMs. Because to be quite honest, it gives either people an unfair advantage or a laborious disadvantage. It also forces the interviewers to change questions and possibly format - which is work they don't need.

Also keep in mind that national investigations have been started and people tracked down from their posts on here (the GCSE paper scandel is a case in point).

!MEa - relax. Just go with the flow on the day. Just to give a personal experience, there were 4 of us that met on my interview day and we ended up going for a drink down the union and went shopping down oxford st. I think 3 of us got in and we're still friends....See whats happening and adapt.
Hi every1, just had a little question- Last yr in my St Geo interview they asked me who is part of the medical team...

I am not too sure about the answer and so would like to know what would you say if u were 2 b asked a similar question...

Thanks

It would depend on where and when but in general a team would be made up of:

Doctors:
- Consultants
-- Specialist Registras (training to be consultants)
--- SHO (senior house officers, getting experience)
---- Foundation doctors (fresh out of med school)
----- Medical Students? (3-5th years working within the team, though mainly observation only)

Nurses

There are about a bajillion different types of nurse and I'm not even going to pretend to know what half of them do.

Physiotherapists

Social Workers and Health Psychologists

Auxilliary Nurses and Health Care Assistants

Porters even (although they don't tend to 'belong' to a medical team, rather the whole hospital or maybe a ward.

Just because I've put these in a list doesnt mean this represents some strict heirarchy, its just the order it came into my head in. There are tonnes more, including some very specialist roles.
thanks a lot for your reply and i found it very helpful... do u think a paramedic, radiographer etc are also part of the team because if someone for instance breaks their leg, then a paramedic, radiographer for the xrays, pharmacist for the medicines and a physiotherapist r all involved...
