Hi,
I'm planning to apply for Biomedical science through UCAS clearing if I don't get my course through UCAS Extra. I wanted to know what to know what type of jobs I can do with this degree. I did do some of my research and I'm leaning towards medical lab technician? Is medical lab technician the correct job title? Because I saw different job titles for this role. Anyway, I would like to know if I did pursue this career, should I pick biomedical degree (3 years, biomedical with year in industry (4 years) or biomedical science with foundation year (4years). I'm doing btec applied science level 3 so I feel like I should pick the one with foundation year because I heard biomedical science is difficult and I didn't do a level sciences so I feel like I might be behind than other students. But I kinda might to pick the one with a year in industry because I heard that most employers want someone who has at least a year's worth of experience especially for the medical lab tech job because there are more chance you will be employed. Please help me!
BTEC Applied Science is going to be very limiting - you will be looking at lower Unis only and many will insist on specific BTEC units.
At that level of Uni, then Lab Tech is your likely career https://www.healthcareers.nhs.uk/explore-roles/healthcare-science/roles-healthcare-science/life-sciences/biomedical-science and there are easier way of doing that than with an expensive degree - https://www.jobs.nhs.uk/xi/vacancy/917141705
If you want to do more than 'just lab work' then take another year to get science A levels and apply to more specialised courses - example https://www.bristol.ac.uk/cellmolmed/study/undergraduate/

Hi @Pandalovesfood

There are loads of jobs you can do with a Biomed degree, as well as medical lab tech. Biomed grads are highly sought after due to the transferable skills you will gain on the course, such as analytical and written skills. You almost always guaranteed a role, whether the first role is your dream job or you have to wait a few months after gradation, you will be employable.

Below are a list of a few jobs/areas you may be interested in:
- Research/academia
- Teaching
- Science communication (e.g. working for Cancer Research UK)
- Medical writing
- NHS/NHS Scientist
- Genomic counselling
- Pharmaceutical companies (e.g. marketing, pharmacovigilance)
- Consulting for life sciences
- Accounting
- Finance
- Recruitment

Ultimately, within reason, you can go into anything with biomed degrees!

As for which degree to pick, it would be worth discussing your options with the admissions tutor for the universities you are interested in. They will be able to provide you with more guidance regarding whether you need a foundation year or not. I would highly recommend a placement year. I completed a placement year with a pharmaceutical company doing Medical Affairs. I loved my placement and it taught me a lot about what I want out of a career whilst also developing transferable skills. It will also make you more employable afterwards! I would definitely recommend a placement year - in my experience you are treated like a colleague and carry out tasks as if you were in full employment with them permanently. However, even though you apply for a university that offers placement years, it does not mean you are guaranteed one as you will need to externally apply to companies competing against students from different universities.

There are a wide variety of placement opportunities from working within a lab, the 'business' side of pharmaceuticals (e.g., medical affairs, marketing, pharmacovigilance), field work/conservation/zoos and biotech companies. You may also be able to gain experience in scientific writing or in a field that is not directly linked to science, such as finance.

Which universities are you interested in?

Well this is rubbish because many of the lower ranked universities do accredited Biomedical Science degrees which you need to become a Biomedical Scientist. So a lower ranked uni may in fact open up more career opportunities in this degree area not fewer
Op it depends on if you do an accredited IBMS undergraduate degree or not. If your degree is accredited then you will have the opportunity if you wish to pursue a role as a Biomedical Scientist.
Other related roles open to Biomedical Science degree graduates (whether their degree is accredited or not) have been laid out on this thread

I would recommend researching this pathway also

Hi, I'm replying quite late but my mums a medical lab technician, her job is quite fun and she says a lot of biomed students work with her too. one thing she told me was a lot of biomed students join and they stay there (as in they don't really progress further) and they're unhappy. Another thing is that the jb my mum does is unqualified (u dont need a uni degree to do it) so i feel like if you did biomed just to stay as a lab technician then it wouldnt be worth it, if its just for experience/starting off then its okay imo but not something permanent!
