Biomedical sciences

I recently viewed a pros and cons list of biomedical sciences as a career, and a huge con I noted was that it’s a very competitive field due to its limited funding and job opportunities.

What can I do to stand out as a University applicant, and throughout university to land a job in this sector?

Thank you
Try to get yourself into a more prestigious/well-known university. Regardless of the university you eventually go to, work harder and graduate with first-class honours. During your study, you should also consider finding research internships to gain experience. Networking with professionals in the field is great but not necessary.
I'm going to disagree with the previous poster - if I am shortlisting applications I don't care which university someone went to. I care about what they do with it.

During university and your career? Networking is *everything*. It shouldn't be, but it is. My biggest piece of advice would be to get work experience in the area you are interested in. The big thing that separates new graduates is their work experience.

Hello,

I've just finished my Biomedical Science degree at the University of Lincoln so hope I can give an insight to what it's been like for me!

When choosing a university, it can be advantageous to choose one that is Institute of Biomedical Science (IBMS) accredited. IBMS is the professional body for those who work within the field of biomedical science. The accreditation ensures that the course meets the academic requirements for registration as a biomedical scientist with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC). In order to register as a biomedical scientist, you would need additionally to complete the IBMS registration portfolio in an approved laboratory. This is often done by students between second and third year so when you can finish university with your IBMS accreditation but also get support when applying for this sandwich year.

Another thing to note from my experience is that biomedical science is degree which can lead on to a range of other opportunites, not just becoming a biomedical scientist. I've decided to pursue a career as a data scientist by completing an MSc in data science and applied analytics. I was able to get onto this degree due to the data analysis skills and coding modles I'd completed on my undergraduate course. It's worth noting that not all universities offer the same modules so it's worth having a look at specific subject interests you have within biomedical science and choosing a course which covers those, therefore you can have the opportunity to specialise or go into a different field after your degree.

I hope this helps!
If anybody is interested in a career in Biomedical Sciences, I would highly recommend the Bsc Health Care sciences degree at University of Bradford. It is a very targeted course for those interested in a career in Healthcare Sciences and you have a work placement at an NHS lab which means you get to do your portfolio and that increases your chances of gaining a full time job. This goes across all sections for example Microbiology, Biochemistry, Haematology etc.

I'm still studying biomed in uni but from the placement applications and interviews I've done, experience is definitely one of the most important things. So try and go to a uni with a placement year if you do want to study biomedical science
