'Elite' for what? Law? Creative Writing? Aeronautical Engineering?

What is considered an Elite University in the UK?

Probably something along the lines of Oxford, Cambridge, Imperial, LSE, UCL then a few others like Warwick, Durham, Edinburgh, St Andrews, Bristol, Kings etc are also regarded highly. But it is also subject dependent like another user has said

There are many ways, but commonly used rankings are https://www.topuniversities.com/university-rankings/world-university-rankings/2023 for international, and https://www.thecompleteuniversityguide.co.uk/league-tables/rankings for UK-based rankings. I personally prefer international rankings to compare our unis to the world, and because the local unis uses stuff like "student satisfaction" (very subjective, and biases lower ranked unis).

For me, this is my overall perception. Some subjects are better, some subjects are worse. Some unis are at the upper end, some are at the lower end.

Tier 1 - Best: Oxbridge
Top 2 unis in UK, comparable to MIT/Harvard/Stanford, truly world-class in their unique ways.

Tier 2 - Prestigious: UCL, ICL (2+), Manchester, Edinburgh, LSE (2+), Bristol (2-), Warwick, Durham
The remaining stronger Russell Groups. Not as good as Oxbridge, but they're still great universities. International reputation not as great as Oxbridge, but their influence is definitely beyond the UK. 2+ and 2 are difficult to distinguish. Top 10 unis in UK.

Tier 3 - Decent: Glasgow, St Andrews (3+), KCL, Southampton, Leeds, Birmingham, Lancaster, Nottingham, Sheffield, Newcastle, QMUL, Bath, Cardiff (3-/4+), Royal Holloway (saved because of music), SOAS (saved because of arts) etc.
All but 0-4 Russell Groups are at this level or higher. Top 25-30 unis. Includes some which are world-class for a few subjects.

Tier 4 - Mediocre: QUB (4+/3-), Liverpool (4+/3-), Sussex, Loughborough (4+), Reading, Strathclyde, UEA, Oxford Brookes (4-), etc.
Run-of-the-mill unis, some are better than average, some are below average. Down to about top 50 UK.

Tier 5 - Poor: University of Kent and quite a few unis honestly
Prospects aren't great, not much there except maybe that odd specialist subject or two. Top 100 UK.

Tier 6 - Crappy: University of the West of England and a good few unis at this level
While not scams, the prospects are poor in most cases, unless you're lucky or in a better area than overall. Top 100-125 unis.

Tier 7 - Trash: Uni of Bedfordshire (7-), some Mickey Mouse degree-stampers
A lot of the degrees there are genuine scams. Only thing you'd be able to do is get over the degree stamp. But really, why are we funding these unis? About 6 unis here.

I agree. Those tier 7 universities as you put it really should not be funded with taxpayers money. They have dismal graduate prospects. Certain courses at higher ranking universities should also come with some kind of warning. For example, the UK produces more film and photography graduates than there are film and photography jobs in the whole of Europe!

That is true, they really are not just 'dismal', they're scams.

Perhaps we should crack down on the crappy unis. But how many should we crack down on? Perhaps the six crappiest ones.

I personally went to UWE to study Biomedical Science and am fairly happy with how my career is going so far.

Wouldn’t say it’s crappy much at all and the uni had helped me out immensely. 🙂

What do you think of my ranking of unis? Remember I did say overall ranking, so it's only as a general rule.

And sure some subjects may be better than others, but on the whole, UWE isn't a good uni. Even compared to Sussex and Oxford Brooke (they ain't great, just average, or a bit shabby).

I agree with tier 7 to say the least. Other than that I don't really care about university rankings to be honest.

So which universities should be removed?

And to be fair, there are different tiers of unis.

I love how authoritative you are with this completely speculative, fictional list. Is it your own work, or lifted from a blog/another thread on TSR?

First, it is my own work.

For sources, I used QS Overall ranking 2023, qs subject ranking 2022, the complete uni guide ranking. I searched TSR for uni experiences and stuff only as supplement.

So no I didn't use a blog/another thread on TSR.

And fictional? Oxbridge being the very top is reasonable overall, along with Bedfordshire being in the bottom. I may be too harsh on the mediocre unis, placing Liverpool and Sussex as mediocre.

But at least it is better than the other lists on TSR. And I don't penalise subject specialist universities as much as others. For example, I saved Royal Holloway from tier 5 because of their music. I saved SOAS from tier 5 because of their arts.

There was another attempt https://www.thestudentroom.co.uk/showthread.php?t=4227668 but honestly I thought it was ******** as they put LSE in the same rank as Cardiff

Cambridge
You can go about this all day. There is no definitive list of unis.

Some people worship the Russell Group. Others don't. Just like every other metric.

I go to St Andrews and for me, the teaching is exactly what I would want. I would hate going to any of the London unis. We all have our own desires for a uni. It being elite shouldn't matter.

Bro you forgot Oxford, and unis like Warwick/Edinburgh.

https://www.thestudentroom.co.uk/showthread.php?t=4227668 is a thread but... honestly it's a bit ********.

What do you think of my listing of unis?

I don't exactly worship the russell group, as you can clearly see in my ranking unis like Lancaster and St Andrews are in the 'decent' tier despite not being in Russell Group.

A load of nonsense really. Russell Group shouldn't really come into it considering it is a self-selecting group of universities to try to get more research funding.
