I would save your £6000, whether you self fund or get a student loan (if available). The Level 5 DET is all you need to teach in Further education (plus your subject specific Level 3). In all of my time teaching (including being a tutor for L5 DTLLS (precursor to DET) and QTLS mentor, I have never known anyone studying for a L6 DET. I have known some to go on and complete a Degree in Education and training using a L5 DET, but again this is not essential to teach in FE.

Thanks a lot. I was told that I can't register as a qualified teacher only with level 5 .

You cant register as a qualified teacher with either L5 or L6. What you need to do is complete L5 DET and then apply for QTLS through SET (link to follow). You need to be teaching -this can be unpaid or voluntary- learners aged 14 and above (so 6th Form, FE, Adult learners etc) to complete the portfolio. Successful completion of QTLS gives parity with QTS (school teachers) and you can then apply for teaching roles in schools as a qualified teacher (assuming your subject specialism is relevant to school curriculum). This is a long winded way of doing it and as the DET is aimed at College lecturers, getting a qualified teaching role in a school is not guaranteed. The main way to guarantee a school job, is to complete a PGCE with QTS where placements take place in a school setting rather than a DET. https://set.et-foundation.co.uk/your-career/qtls
What is your subject specialism and what qualifications do you hold in it?
Are you hoping to teach in Schools or Colleges?

You may struggle to get a job in a school on qualified teacher pay until you have completed the DET and obtained QTLS. level 5 DET is for teaching learners ages 14-19 and above so as long as you can get the teaching hours to complete the QTLS you should be okay. What groups have you used for your eight observed teaching sessions for the DET?

Yes. You are absolutley right . Observations are for business students in college , adults basically. You have helped me a lot with the information about the Qualified teacher status. Something apart from this: Do you have any idea if UK qulified teacher can practice abroad with UK qualification?
Hope the SFE will answer about financing the Level 6.( Just in case if i continue with that)

I am aware that some people with DET and QTLS have applied to teach abroad, but I don't have any evidence of any that were successful (there may be some). Overseas schools normally ask for a full PGCE and QTS.

Hi there,

DET courses are treated as an ITT course and therefore is eligible for funding as long as the course and learning provider attracts SFE funding. Do you have a course name and university?

Thanks, Clare

Thank you,

The college details are not showing on the database. Have you just finished your level 5 at the same college?

Thanks, Jason

Thank you,

Do you know which university its through out of New College Swindon. Staffordshire Uni and North Hertfordshire college. Just so I can check this on the university database.

Thanks, Jason

Hi Daniel,

Thanks, we can't fund a course matching this on our database, though it's possible the college hasn't updated the database yet.

Can you please tell us what kind of funding you received for the level 5? For example, did you get the Tuition Fee and Maintenance Loans?

Thanks, Graeme

Hello, level 5 funding is Tuition Fee and Maintenance Loans. We were hoping level 6 will be the same if the funding will be avaliable.
Thanks

Okay, in this case that course isn't eligible for any funding. However, it could be that your college just hasn't updated the database to show this yet. We'd suggest asking them directly if they plan to do this.

Once they do let us know and we can check to see what kind of funding you'd be entitled to.

Thanks, Graeme
