What are the different types of research called?

What are the different types of research called?

Sorry, I don't know anything about anything so please bear with me.So there is research that requires a lot of statistics and collects findings as numbers and puts them in tables, but also the "here's a timeline of stuff I found out" type of research.How would you refer to the research that results in these statistics-heavy papers vs the research that goes into writing non-fiction like the "Don't Know Much About" book series or National Geographic articles?And is one just a predecessor of the other? Like, people who write educational content compile their findings from the math-y research papers and put them into words that laymen can understand? What would this process be called?
