How to perform Search Engine Optimisation for my website (SEO)

Hi Folks

I have a small business and want to perform SEO so that it ranks towards the top when someone performs (say) a google search.

Is it difficult to perform? If so, would I need someone qualified to perform it? Would it be expensive?

Thanks

I would do an SEO audit to check how your site is doing. There are plenty of sites that would do this for free (but some will require you to opt-in to their services)

There is usually a long list of things that you can tweak to boost your SEO, depending on the size of the site.

There are 3 areas inb SEO: on page, technical, and off page. See: https://www.linkedin.com/pulse/what-3-types-seo-harry-sanders/
You have the most control with the on page and technical side of things, and these can be done relatively quickly if you have a well designed website (if not, there will be quite a bit of work to do). The thing that will take the most time is the off page side of things and that would likely require an ongoing subscription

Is it difficult to perform? It depends on how technical you are for the technical and on page side of things. The off page stuff involve a lot of networking

Do you need someone qualified to perform it? SEO is not a regulated profession, so you don't need someone qualified per se, but you do need someone competent to do the job

Would it be expensive? It depends on the individual specialist. I would budget something like £1000 for the first 3 months or so, depending on how large the undertaking is.

Search Engine Optimization (SEO) is the practice of optimizing your website and its content to increase its visibility and ranking on search engine results pages (SERPs). Here are some steps you can take to perform SEO for your website:

1. Conduct keyword research: Identify the keywords and phrases that your target audience is using to search for products or services like yours. Use keyword research tools like Google Keyword Planner or SEMrush to find relevant keywords.

2. Optimize your website structure: Ensure that your website has a clear and organized structure. Use header tags (H1, H2, H3) to organize your content, and ensure that your website is easy to navigate.

3. Optimize your content: Create high-quality, informative, and engaging content that includes your target keywords. Ensure that your content is well-structured, easy to read, and includes images and videos where appropriate.

4. Build high-quality backlinks: Backlinks are links from other websites that point to your website. High-quality backlinks from reputable websites can improve your website's credibility and authority, and boost your search engine rankings. You can build backlinks by creating high-quality content that other websites will want to link to, or by reaching out to other websites and asking for a link.

5. Ensure your website is mobile-friendly: With the majority of internet traffic coming from mobile devices, it's important to ensure that your website is optimized for mobile viewing. Use responsive design to ensure that your website looks great on all screen sizes, and ensure that your website loads quickly on mobile devices.

6. Monitor your website's performance: Use tools like Google Analytics to monitor your website's traffic, bounce rate, and other metrics. Use this data to identify areas for improvement and adjust your SEO strategy accordingly.

Remember, SEO is an ongoing process, and it can take time to see results. Be patient, and continue to refine your strategy over time.

Performing search engine optimization (SEO) for your website involves various techniques and practices to improve its visibility and ranking in search engine results. Here are some key steps to get you started with SEO:
Keyword Research: Identify relevant keywords and phrases that your target audience is likely to use when searching for information related to your website. Tools like Google Keyword Planner or other keyword research tools can assist you in finding popular and relevant keywords.
On-Page Optimization: Optimize your website's individual pages by incorporating target keywords into page titles, headings, meta tags, and throughout the content. Ensure that your content is well-structured, informative, and provides value to users. Pay attention to factors like keyword density, readability, and including relevant multimedia elements (images, videos).
Technical SEO: Ensure that your website is technically optimized for search engines. This includes having clean and crawlable website code, optimizing page loading speed, using descriptive URLs, implementing schema markup, creating XML sitemaps, and optimizing website navigation and internal linking.
Quality Content: Create high-quality, engaging, and original content that aligns with your target keywords and provides value to users. Regularly update your website with fresh content to attract both users and search engines. Incorporate relevant keywords naturally within your content, but avoid keyword stuffing.
Backlink Building: Acquire high-quality backlinks from reputable websites within your industry. Backlinks are an important ranking factor and can be obtained through techniques like guest blogging, content promotion, influencer outreach, or creating valuable resources that others will want to link to.
Mobile Optimization: Ensure that your website is mobile-friendly and responsive. With the increasing use of mobile devices, Google and other search engines prioritize mobile-optimized websites in search results. Test your website's mobile-friendliness using tools like Google's Mobile-Friendly Test.
User Experience (UX): Focus on providing a positive user experience on your website. Make sure it is easy to navigate, has a clear site structure, fast loading times, and is visually appealing. A good user experience helps retain visitors and encourages them to engage with your content.
Analytics and Monitoring: Set up website analytics, such as Google Analytics, to track your website's performance, user behavior, and keyword rankings. Regularly monitor these metrics to identify areas for improvement and track the impact of your SEO efforts.
It's important to note that SEO is an ongoing process and requires consistent effort and optimization. Stay updated with the latest industry trends and search engine algorithm changes to adapt your SEO strategy accordingly. Additionally, consider seeking professional SEO services or consulting if you require expert assistance in optimizing your website for search engines.

Could you do it yourself?
I just built a very simple website myself and am curious about how I can drive traffic to it

You can work on SEO by yourself. There is much useful info here and on other resources to learn how to do it. Otherwise, you can hire someone for this work. I personally didn't dare to do this work on my own and ended up working with seo link building services that have big experience and have created and executed effective link building campaigns exactly for my niche. No regrets, actually.

Thanks to everyone. All points are covered in the above discussion about SEO, but I would like to add one point, E-E-A-T, to this discussion:
E-E-A-T stands for expertise, experience, authoritativeness, and trustworthiness.
Focusing on expertise, experience, authoritativeness, and trust will help improve the perception of your site's overall quality.
