Hi, i recently got a response from one of my unis explaining why i was rejected but i’m not sure that i understand:

“The grades alone ranked him in the bottom 1/3 of the gathered field”

I’m guessing they mean out of all applicants, the grades were quite a way down the list
It means that purely based on academic grades, you were placed in the bottom third of candidates. A gathered field approach is where they compare all applicants before making decisions.

As an aside, it’s odd wording for applicant feedback, and I do wonder whether someone was supposed to reword something that was passed on by a course selector.

Which university would be so specific with application feedback other than Oxbridge?
