For Natural Science - is a 2:1 less prestigious/good for job opportunities as opposed to say a first in a specific subject elsewhere?

For which employer/what circumstances. Every case will be different, there is no single, correct answer.

So for which employer/circumstances would this affect opportunity more than others? And when would this matter less?

Well I guess a 2:1 will be by default ‘less prestigious’ than a first. But honestly - I have never seen a job, nor PhD position, which requires a first.

It’s much more about having a quite good degree and passing their interviews and assessments than it is getting a first. Sure, it might be beneficial if you’re applying for a really competitive position, but for everything which I’d applied, the degree was the least important part - I just needed the (predicted) 2:1 to be allowed to do the rest of their assessments.

First of all, get past the hypothetical that someone might bet a 2.1 from Cambridge but a 1st elsewhere - why might that be?
