Cambridge NatSci Honors

How do you graduate Cambridge with a first in Natural Science? It said on the website, "The Natural Sciences Tripos has adopted a system whereby 100% of the marks for the overall degree classification are from Part II. I.e. if you are awarded a 2:1 for your Part II, this will be your final B.A. Degree classification. Parts IA and IB are not used, in part due to the norm referencing approach employed in those years."

So if you fail the first 2 years but do well your last year, that would result in you graduating with whatever you scored on your last year? Then what's the point of doing well in the first 2 years? And if it does matter, how do they affect your degree classification/transcript?

If you fail either of your first 2 years, then you will not normally be allowed to progress to the following year unless there is a medical or other severe cause (which would then normally require you to repeat the failed year). Exam results from all years appear on your transcript so they are available in principle to employers, and since knowledge from previous years is assumed in the following years, performance in final exams is strongly correlated with past performance.
