what is the atmosphere in Bath university like?

Hey~

Year 13 student who firmed Bath here
I’ve asked the same question on many threads on TSR so here’s what I’ve been told:

The overall vibe is more relaxed and chill than other universities since it’s a smaller uni, but people still focus well on their studies.

The city is beautiful with Georgian Architecture and many parks to visit, but the cost of living is high so you may want to factor that in.

The student body comprises of around 70% home students, but around 30% of international students, with most from China, Hong Kong, Malaysia, India and some from Thailand. So, lots of potential cultural mingling!

However, it’s also been said that the city is predominantly white and upper middle class, but to the people I’ve heard talk about the vibe, everyone was friendly. I haven’t heard of any racist incidents mentioned. Bath was said to have been given the stereotype of being ‘posh’, but all this means is that the city is quite expensive, and subsequently so do most people who live there. This does not mean they are snobby like the media usually portrays them as.

There’s also a lot of cultural societies there.
In addition to the societies, there’s sports societies and the facilities are amazing, there’s just generally a wide range of societies for everyone to get involved in if they fancy. There’s also lots of societies for those who are more introverted and not sporty, like board games club and recreational clubs that aren’t commitments.

The nightlife vibes in Bath has polarised opinions - some say it’s great depending on how you make the night, others say it’s dead and gets boring after the first year. If you like to party, you can take a 10 minute journey to Bristol, which is much larger. It all really depends on your intentions and hopes for uni. It’s been said you get the best of both bustling city and quiet town in Bath.

The student support in Bath is said to be very supportive, with a strong acknowledgement of students’ mental health. This is especially relevant to Bath because it is rather more of a STEM-oriented uni with courses which are full on. That being said, you still have the ability to balance work and rest, just manage your time well. The student satisfaction in the uni is one of the highest in the UK, so that should mean something.

Now, while I said all this, I would still encourage you to visit the campus in person if you haven’t already to see if you like the vibe.

Best wishes,
Haneul

Thank you so much!
That was very helpful!!
Hi there,

I’m currently a second year student at the university so I can give you some background about Bath!

Bath is a smaller campus uni so there’s not as much Hussle and bussle as some bigger or city universities. The campus has a beautiful lake where a lot of students (especially in the sun) go to sit and relax which is a pretty peaceful environment.
Alternately we have an SU which has more of a lively atmosphere. This is where the university hosts club nights, happy hour and has pool, table football etc where people go to socialise, have a drink etc.

Bath has a whole host of societies, from sports, arts, cultural societies and more. The vibe is always welcoming in these and so many people build their friendships through these. You don’t have to commit if you decide you don’t feel its for you and can give everything a try so its nice way of expanding your social life and getting into new hobbies.

Nightlife in Bath is maybe smaller than most unis however, there is almost always a student social going on and Bristol is only a ten-minute train away if you were looking into something bigger.

The university itself is super helpful to students in order to help them integrate in. there is a myriad of support from wellbeing to financial so you don’t have to worry about finding help. Its right there for you.

Overall, bath atmosphere is pretty peaceful, with beautiful views and architecture, a very welcoming environment and lots of activities to get involved in. Hope this helped!
