does it have to do with sum using geometric sequences?

Just use the basic log property divsion -> subtraction then a bit of thinking/playing with simple numbers.

Or equivalently note that the sum of logs is the product of the arguments.

Yeah this question bugged me as well. In the mark scheme the suggested method is literally just to add up 48 terms in your calculator, thanks edexcel!

No, its just using either
log(a/b) = log(a) - log(b)
or
log(a) + log(b) = log(ab)
and spot a simple pattern.

Answer spotting, from the upper limit
log_5(48 + 2) = log_5(2*25) = ...

I agree, but the second line does not say type each term into your calculator. It "says" combine the logs
log(a)+log(b)+... = log(ab...)
and simplify to get the third line. The simplfiication should be reasonably clear?

ahh yes I see it is a simplification. Quite unclear on the mark scheme but it is a mark scheme not a method sheet I suppose😅

Yup, a mark scheme doesnt have all the explanation on. Tbh simply writing out a few terms gives

Using log(a/b) = log(a)-log(b)
-log(2) + log(3) - log(3) + log(4) - .... + log(50)
so basically telescoping/differences

Using log(a) + log(b) = log(ab)
As per the mark scheme ...
