Loosely translated, this means if I were asked. My question is whether this phrase flows nicely and would be acceptable to use.

Yeah that sounds natural to me.
I think 'I was' instead of 'I were' would sound a bit more casual and less stuffy but I assume you still need to have correct grammar so it's fine.
