How do years in industry work?

Does the university arrange it with the employers for you or do you do it all by yourself? If you fail to find a placement, what happens? Where do people work during their year in industry?
Normally you have to arrange it although the uni sometimes can recommend placements or help you prepare for interviews etc, although the amount of support offered can vary. But ultimately it's up to you to apply for the position and undertake the necessary admin to make it happen (e.g. arranging accommodation for where it is, if it's outside of the UK arranging visas and flights, etc).

If you don't get a placement then you'll just revert to the standard course normally. Some unis may also require you average a certain amount (higher than the usual minimum pass amount for progression) in order to continue on the year in industry version of the course (perhaps to ensure you are best able to get a position on such a scheme).

That said there are some courses where the placement is arranged by the uni due to being directly linked with the uni (e.g. UCLs archaeology with placement year) or where the placements are integrated into the course and already arranged (e.g. many allied health professions courses). But for most of your standard year in industry/placement year type courses, it's up to the student to make sure they have a placement lined up.
