Should I take a History or English Lit A-Level?

I want to do one of these as my 3rd A-Level but I’m completely 50/50 on which to choose
- My other A-Levels will be Spanish and German and I’m not willing to take four A-levels or drop one of the languages, I do have an interest in going to Oxbridge to do Spanish and German
- I’m currently on a higher grade for History than English Lit
- History has always been one of my favourite subjects whereas I used to not like English lit
- Currently, I think that I prefer history in class and I can often find myself getting bored in English however when I’m revising English I have to force myself to stop because I can just spend hours fully focused on it with no difficulty, which I can’t do at all for history
- The languages page on my 6th form says that anyone who has an interest in applying to Oxbridge is advised to take English Lit
- I’m naturally significantly better at history, I really struggle to come up with good analysis for English
- Looking at the courses, I absolutely love the topics covered in history, the entire course is in my favourite time period, with English I’m much less familiar with the books so it’s harder to really tell but from what I’ve heard about them, they seem interesting
- My big issue with English is that I never read for fun, like ever, I will happily read the texts in GCSE and I do enjoy reading, but I just never really got into it, aside from my set texts I’ve read 2 books in the entirety of secondary school, I feel like that might cause English to be a disaster
History is definitely the safer option, but I really have a gut feeling for English and the thought of taking it makes me much more excited. Any advice is appreciated!

You seem to enjoy history more and you got a higher grade in it so if I were you, I’d pick it.

I'm pretty sure you can swap A levels a couple of weeks into Year 12 although it depends on your school. I had some friends doing A level English and they didn't enjoy it a lot and found the grade boundaries extremely high but it really depends person to person. Maybe you could speak to your teachers about doing a week of English and then a week of History and see which one you liked more?

Good luck and have fun !!

My other A-Levels will be Spanish and German and I’m not willing to take four A-levels or drop one of the languages, I do have an interest in going to Oxbridge to do Spanish and German
I have looked at the entry requirements for modern foreign language degrees at Oxbridge:
https://www.undergraduate.study.cam.ac.uk/courses/modern-and-medieval-languages (which then points you to https://www.undergraduate.study.cam.ac.uk/files/publications/mml_subject_requirements.pdf)
https://www.ox.ac.uk/admissions/undergraduate/courses/course-listing/modern-languages
There's no mention of requiring English Lit to be a subject that you need to take.

After some further digging, I have found the following page:
https://www.undergraduate.study.cam.ac.uk/apply/before/choosing-high-school-subjects
I might assume that's where your college got the information from. I think it's best if you check why your college recommends you to take English Lit specifically. I would also presume that you don't intend to take Literature at degree level, so there's no point in doing as an A Level.

Should you decide to do History as a degree at Oxbridge:
https://www.undergraduate.study.cam.ac.uk/courses/history (which would take you to the following page: https://www.undergraduate.study.cam.ac.uk/files/publications/history_subject_requirements.pdf, and even then History is not a strict requirement for a number of colleges)
https://www.ox.ac.uk/admissions/undergraduate/courses/course-listing/history (History is not necessarily a required A Level)

On Cambridge's page, you would note that the entry requirements for the degree includes: History (this may be required by some Colleges), English (language or literature), languages, Mathematics. These are recommendations as opposed to strict requirements. If anything, I would say your languages would help meet the requirements instead of Literature.

Grades are important, and you're definitely recommended to go for the subject you're better in.

Having said the above, you're better off getting a second opinion from someone who went to Oxbridge to study the above degrees.

If you intend to do a degree in another subject, it's going to be significantly easier for me if you specify the subject.

I do languages at Cambridge and did history and English at A level. While English has been helpful in terms of literature during my degree, the people who don't do English lit A evel catch up soon enough. It'll just take you an extra couple of weeks to get used to the essays, but that's fine because supervision essays don't count towards your degree. Do what you enjoy more, and you'll be more motivated to work and get the grades you want at A level

Thank you so much! I think if I weren't to do Spanish + German it would just be Spanish + Another language/History (Probably not English at Oxbridge at least as I think the language degree courses there have a lot of lit in them anyway), the only other degree I'd have any interest in is possibly Theology. It is almost certain though that I'll just stick to languages
