OK, this is a niche area I know but we were just discussing daft gene names with the grad who lives in our house and works on fruit flies - her two favourites:

Cheap date: to get Drosophila to mate more effectively you feed them a bit of alcohol; if this particular gene is mutated they just fall over flat on their backs... hence cheap date...

Ken and barbie: no visible external genitalia

:biggrin: I HAVE to find a way to get those into my exam answers...

Our lecturer this morning finally mentioned the sonic hedgehog and super sonic. He didn't actually tell us what they were, but gave them as examples of funny names! The ones he was talking about were "son of sevenless" , "daughter of sevenless" and "bride of sevenless" .

Just thought I had to share this purely because it made me wake up in lectures as it reminded me of this thread!
lol. Glad that Shh is having such a big effect. In both our embryology tutes it has come up as a major signalling chemical, still defintitely a section worth staying awake in :rolleyes:
